stuff done recently-ish
Nov. 28th, 2017 09:17 pmThings I have done since Thanksgiving:
1. Finished Ancillary Mercy and returned all three parts of the trilogy to the library.
I liked the books, btw! I think the ending was a bit inconclusive, but under the circumstances I'm not sure what other ending would have been remotely workable. Still, I'd love to check in on the characters five or ten years down the line to get a sense of how everything will play out.
Also, and more tangentially, it was a fascinating experience to read a story where literally everyone was female. Even the handful of characters who were textually noted/signaled as being biologically male were still treated narratively and culturally as female, to the point where I kept forgetting they had been signaled as biologically male. Every other person defaulted to female, and after the initial surprise, I just... stopped noticing. It became background. Everyone was female, all relationships were between women, and there was no need to justify any of it because that was just how the world worked. It was so restful. :)
2. Attended the second live Not the IRS training session, and got my NY tax preparer number while I was there. I still have one more online skills training course to get through before I am ready to serve, but hey, at least I get paid for this stuff.
3. Acquired a certificate of residence and printed out the documents I need to send to TC3 to complete my financial aid application. I will probably fill them out tomorrow and fax them on Saturday.
4. Raked six bags of leaves from all parts of my yard, tagged them, and set them out for collection. They were duly collected. :)
5. Finished a prompt ficlet and made a good start on the last remaining one in that list. Also began tossing around ideas for my Yuletide fic. There are two basic options, and I'm not yet sure whether I want to do Thing A or Thing B, and what details I'd attach to each choice.
6. Began working on holiday gifts (Dad = done; Mom = oh god too many options, also I need a birthday gift; Vicky = will buy the thing on Thursday or Friday; Cara = Vicky and I are going halves on a thing and I just need to pay her in December; Cat = just have to place the order at a more reasonable time; Susan = I have no idea and this is a problem; coworkers at the rental office = I'll bring in cookies at some point) and bought stamps for holiday cards.
7. Had a dentist appointment, where they discovered that I have the beginning of a cavity behind one of my older fillings. Blargh. So now I have an appointment in mid-December to get that fixed. (At least my gums are now in good shape, thanks to regular flossing?)
-----
So, you know. I am doing pretty well, all things considered. :) I am not even terrified of working two ~25 hour-per-week jobs and taking two college courses all at once from January through mid-April. I can make that work with some judicious time management. I won't have much free time for fannish stuff, but maybe I'll get through some of the backlogged books on my to-read shelf instead.
I am quite sure if I'd tried that schedule last year, I would have had a nervous breakdown by mid-February at the absolute latest. Three cheers for medication!
