Greetings from New Jersey!

I skipped the annual winter solstice service at my church last night because I had a bunch of prep work to get through for my trip. So it goes.

In the event, I got through all the prep work, got a good night's sleep, and hit the road just after 11am this morning. I didn't hit any big construction projects and traffic, while heavy in places, was flowing easily, so I arrived at my parents' house around 3:15pm -- quite good time. I have now washed all my laundry, and I intend to go to bed early-ish since tomorrow Mom and I need to catch the 8:37am train into the city. We are going to see the Morgan Library and the Tenement Museum, both of which are new to me, so that should be cool.

I loved the Tenement Museum when we were there a few years ago. We did the tour that is the tailor's apartment.

We did the "sweatshop" tour which is the Levines' living-room garment factory and then the Rogarshevsky family's apartment from ~25 years later. It was really cool!

I have wanted to go to the Cloisters for something like 50 years. Do it for the Vine!

I have been to the Cloisters, actually, but that is a SUMMER attraction -- you have to traverse a whole bunch of unroofed courtyards and even indoors the insulation is, shall we say, insufficient. So in summer it's nicely cool, but in winter it can get brutal.

(Also in summer sometimes there are random sunbathers/bagpipers on the lawns outside the walls, which is always amusing!)

The Morgan Library is lovely, I hope you enjoy it! Still haven't done the tours at the Tenement Museum though it's on my to-do list -- they have several types going on usually, which one are you planning to take?

The Morgan library is jaw-droppingly gorgeous (I cannot imagine having the kind of money necessary to A) buy all those books and art and B) casually have someone construct a building like that to hold all of them!) and I spent Quite A Lot Of Time staring hungrily at the books and wishing they weren't behind glass so I could pull them out and stroke their covers and flip through them until I inevitably got caught by some passage and lost a few hours reading. *wry*

We took the "sweatshop" tour, which involves the Levines' apartment circa 1900 (where Mr. Levine had a garment factory in his tiny living room), and the Rogarshevskys' apartment circa 1915, by which point the building had indoor plumbing and gas lighting, and also the garment industry had been moved to larger more industrial factories.

I would love to go back some day and take one of the other tours. :)
