While I was folding linens at the laundromat around 6:30pm, I got a call from my doctors' office saying that my doctor-of-record had wanted to do some blood tests on me back in January but I'd never come in to get that taken care of.

"Oh, right," I said, vaguely recalling something of the sort. "Yeah, that just never got scheduled."

"Well, it's a fasting draw," said the lady on the phone, "so you'd probably want it in the morning. Do you want the downtown office or the northeast office?"

"Downtown," I said. "And um, how long is the fast?"

"Twelve hours," she said. "Oh, I could get you in tomorrow morning at 8am. It's short notice, but would that work for you?"

"So I couldn't eat anything after 8pm tonight?"

"Right. You can drink water, of course -- drink lots, make sure you don't get dehydrated. And if you're a coffee or tea drinker, you can have that, but you can't put anything in it, no creamers and no sweeteners."

"All right. 8am tomorrow, downtown office," I said. "Tea is fine, but no sugar or honey."

"And no cream," she repeated.

Now I have finished my dinner, five minutes before the fast deadline starts, so here goes twelve hours of "No midnight snack for you! I don't care if you're half-awake at 3am and want a couple prunes before falling back into bed," and also "Please let me not get queasy taking my pills on an empty stomach." *crosses fingers*
