Things done today:

1. Fixed up my NFE fic so it's less "disembodied brains exchanging dialogue in front of a blank backdrop" and also the narration is more solidly settled into my POV character's thoughts and reactions.

2. Baked brownies for church coffee hour tomorrow morning.

3. WORK, ye gods and little fishes. Aunt Boss came in unexpectedly from 10:15 to about 12:30 to catch up on some of her paperwork, which was interesting. Miss California did a bunch of data entry to get a couple spreadsheets updated, sent a bunch of emails based on the spreadsheet data, and then did a bunch of document scanning and physical filing. Meanwhile I did some parking lot inspections and got back to work on uploading updated apartment photos to our website, which remains an annoying and tedious job (both because we only have fifteen photo slots per apartment (and one is always taken by the floor plan) and because the program we draw our website from has a laggy file uploader and a fiddly image management system). We also answered a bunch of phone inquiries and walk-in inquiries, received packages, processed mail, and took about a dozen people on a tour of various studios at 3pm.

Then the guy who tried to do a rooms tour last Friday but didn't make it in before closing tried again today. Once more he set up a showing appointment and then called to say he was running late and might not make it before we closed, but this time I had Miss California around so I told him I'd wait until five minutes past closing just in case. He duly came in one minute past closing, and I took him to see the building while Miss California shut down the office.

And after all that, he didn't even end up renting because it turns out he's just as annoying about wanting to bargain down the rent and/or negotiate for freebies as he is about failing to arrive on time for showings he himself has scheduled. I don't have authority to make changes to lease terms, and I was not going to text Mom Boss or Aunt Boss on their day off, while they were probably in the middle of dinner, to ask them to negotiate with a guy who probably wasn't going to rent the room anyway, since he dangled the old "I have a better offer from another landlord" thing in front of me while simultaneously making the "but my temporary housing ends tomorrow" play. Eh, whatever. I told him I could give him the keys then and there under X terms, but for anything else he'd have to speak to Mom Boss or Aunt Boss on Monday. He didn't take the offer. So he'll contact us on Monday or he won't and I'm not going to lose sleep over it either way.

...

Anyway, the brownies should be cool enough to cut now. I'm going to go do that.

The answer to annoying always-late cheapskate is, "Perhaps you should go to that other landlord then, since you seem unhappy with what we have to offer." He's trying to do a power-play on you by making you wait for him and then trying to get you to take less than what the apartment is worth. If you're lucky, he'll be So Offended that he'll flounce off in a huff, never to be seen again. (Translates to: "Dammit, they're not going to let me get away with anything, let me go find a place with someone who's more of a sucker.")

If not, and he actually rents from you - watch him like a hawk, document every little thing, because he'll try to pull stuff on you every chance he gets and if you don't have things documented you might not catch it until it's too late. I can pretty much guarantee that he'll always be late, with some kind of sob story or excuse, there will always be Something Wrong with his apartment, and he'll generally be a nightmare to deal with. And in the end, he'll probably either vanish into the night owing several months rent or you'll have to evict him because he's several months behind. And he'll probably trash the place out of spite either way.
