edenfalling: golden flaming chalice in a double circle (gold chalice)

Church was a little weird this morning, because I was attempting to be in two places at once.

Background: we split the congregation into four Hospitality Teams, each of which is responsible for four weeks of Sunday services and then gets twelve weeks off. Hospitality includes greeters, ushers, coffee hour setup and cleanup, coffee hour snack providers, and some other ancillary tasks. I always volunteer to bring snacks and do cleanup, because those are clear, defined tasks that are both easy for me and important to make the service work correctly.

More background: unrelated to Hospitality Teams, the Board of Trustees and various finance-related committees keep a joint Google spreadsheet to figure out who will count the offering each week and deposit the cash and checks with our bank.

Back in September, I signed up to do plate count this week and next week.

I discovered last week that my Hospitality Team is up for the last Sunday of December and the first three weeks of January. So after the service lets out and everybody floods into the parlor for snacks and coffee and conversation, I suddenly have to be both in the office counting money AND in the kitchen washing dishes.

I have yet to master the skill of bi-location. *wry*

But fortunately, this was a low-attendance week (because the period between Christmas and New Year is all weird liminal space and a lot of people are still away visiting family) so I just got the kitchen set up and vanished into the office. When I returned, my coworkers had gotten a rhythm going for the dish-washing, so I tidied and consolidated stuff out in the parlor and then helped dump the leftover coffee and put away tablecloths and tables and such. (And showed them the trick for resetting the sterilizer when it goes on the fritz.)

The counting and deposit write-up was trickier than it ought to have been because the adding machine flatly refused to turn on, but I can do addition in my head and have good handwriting so I just hand-wrote the little tally slips and we called it good enough.

This evening I need to put out all the holiday recycling, and I ought to change my linens as well, but right at the moment I think I may go take a nap. Because time is an illusion and I need to catch up on my sleep. :)
