So uh. A thing happened at work today.
First, some background. The rental company I work for has two offices in Ithaca. One is in Collegetown and rents exclusively to Cornell students (...and very occasionally a parent of a Cornell student because some people take "helicopter parent" as a badge of pride rather than a criticism, plus one Cornell staff member who we like and will retain as a tenant for as long as they are willing to stay because they took a very tricky-to-rent apartment off our inventory and thereby removed a headache) -- that's the one I work at. The other is downtown and rents to a mix of Cornell students, local professionals, and a tiny handful of Ithaca College students. That office also hosts our accounting department. Our maintenance department is mostly based in Collegetown but there are a handful of dedicated downtown staff who never come up the hill.
To make a long story short, the downtown office has... uh... let's say they have not really been keeping up with the times in various ways, and this is now coming back to bite them. (Miss Cactus did her best to drag them kicking and screaming into best-practice parity with the Collegetown office, but without seniority or much managerial support, was limited in what she could manage before she found a more congenial job at a local bank.) They are also trying to open a satellite office in one of our other downtown properties so as to have someone closer at hand for showings and paperwork and whatnot.
I have been offered the job of staffing this new satellite office.
On the one hand, it would be a moderate pay raise, a better commission rate, and slightly more paid time per week, which I think would add up to maybe $4,000 more income per year, pre-tax. That is not to be sneezed at! And I'd get to take some of my current job down there with me, so it's not like things would be completely unfamiliar.
On the other hand, I'd be working under Lawyer Man's direct supervision, I'd be directly responsible for trying to dig the downtown office out of a big hole (never fun, always stressful), and I'd have to learn a whole new set of properties and market quirks in a very sink-or-swim situation, while also trying to stay on top of the advertising portion of my current job.
...
I don't know. I asked for the weekend to think it over, which Mom Boss and Aunt Boss agreed to since this was sprung on them nearly as abruptly as on me.
...
I think I need to talk to some family and friends. Because financially, it would be a good move, but in terms of my emotional balance and stress levels? I am leery. But also, if I turn it down, that's not a great look...
