I have had, like, zero colds over the past year and a bit. The causality is not hard to trace: masks that reduce Covid-19 transmission stop the flu, most rhinoviruses, and most of your garden-variety coronaviruses dead in their tracks.

This is nice!

What is less nice is that my body has apparently decided that I have a quota of sick days it needs to fill, and if it can't use its favorite upper respiratory tricks, it will find new methods.

Namely, gastrointestinal woes.

...

On the one hand, 24-hour stomach bugs pass a lot faster than week-long knock-down colds. On the other hand, they are infinitely grosser, and also significantly worse during the acute portion of the ailment. I do not appreciate sitting on a toilet for several hours in a row, a bucket in my hands, bent over with cramps, and desperately hoping I won't add vomit to my list of the night's emissions.

...

Anyway, I felt better today and I did manage 2.5 hours of work-from-home yesterday afternoon. I had also pulled myself together enough to take coherent minutes for my church's annual meeting yesterday evening. So, you know, life goes on.

And you just pinpointed why I am seriously still looking at the fancier masks. Because if I could find one that works consistently well with my glasses, I'd go masked just to cut down on those garden variety issues.

Hope your guts have settled fully.
