lost stories and unsettling dreams

The terrible thing about reading bad or mediocre books is that I want to rewrite them properly. Except in most cases, I know I don't really care enough to write a book's worth of words, and I have no time anyway.

But the 'good' versions of all the bad fiction out there... they haunt me sometimes.

In other news, I had a creepy dream last night in which a German officer was talking to Hitler near the end of WWII. Hitler asked the officer to find a young man so he could transfer his 'dream' to him -- his plans, his force of personality, maybe -- because he knew he was burning out and going completely crazy and he thought maybe a replacement would be able to win the war and establish the thousand-year Reich before the 'dream' drove him crazy too.

The officer was horrified at the notion of living, parasitic ideas, and refused. He also thought to himself that perhaps it would have been a good thing if the assassination attempt had succeeded, since he didn't want anything 'inhuman' ruling his country. Hitler decided that this resistance was proof of the officer's sanity and good sense, and was about to kidnap him and take him down into a bunker where Eva Braun was waiting with hypnotic drugs.

I woke up before I found out what happened.

...That is a creepy, creepy dream, and I'm very glad I wasn't the one who had it. *has had more than her share of creepy dreams, thankyouverymuch*

I tend not to have nightmares, just occasional anxiety dreams or frustration dreams, and in any case I'm often vaguely aware that I'm dreaming, so I think it's easier for me to maintain a layer of distance and keep from getting particularly freaked out. *shrug* That may be a side-effect of the way I used to try (almost religiously) to remember my dreams when I woke up, even though I haven't bothered doing that for several years now.

It's not usual for me to actually remember my dreams, so what ones I do remember are creepy/depressing or outright nightmares. More than once I've dreamed myself as part of a group off to beat this great evil to save the world, but knowing we won't survive it. Obviously I've been reading too many things along those lines. ^^'

It's worrying that my first thought on that dream was 'wow, with a bit of twisting and giant robots that would make an awesome anime.

Apparently the desire to fix the bad is not simply limited to fic =)

On a slightly more serious note, one of my dirty little secrets is that about half of my original fiction (and some of my fanfiction, too) starts as dreams. Of course, I have to tweak the chains of events in the adaptation process, because dream logic is not story logic... but insofar as it's possible, I do tend to dream in coherent stories and plots.

And hey, if you want to turn that idea into a plot pitch, be my guest. I'm certainly not going to do anything with it!
