I called in sick again on Wednesday, having realized that I had a fever on top of the digestive system issues. I'm not sure how I didn't realize that sooner -- I mean, I was alternately shivering and sweating all over the place with no relation to the actual temperature in my apartment -- but being sick does funny things to one's thinking process.

Today I managed to go in and work 4-9pm, and I have the next two days off, so I should be fine by next week.

I also managed to annoy PM by misunderstanding a text message she sent me, which resulted in me texting her and calling her when she wanted me to call the store and not use up her cell phone minutes. In my defense, PM writes notes that make perfect sense if she's already explained them to you verbally, but often no sense whatsoever without that accompanying explanation -- they are reminders, not self-sufficient instructions.

This text, for example, said: If you do not get a return call call my cell i will cover yovr shift tonite wed 12 to 9 on reply needed now.

What she meant, as I learned today, was that when I called her home phone on Tuesday and got no response, I should have immediately called her cell phone. The reason I did not do that was because AO, when calling me to say that RE hadn't responded about covering my Tuesday shift, had said that PM was annoyed at being called on her cell phone and had told AO to call her home phone instead. So by not calling her cell on Tuesday, I was attempting to obey what I thought PM's (secondhand) instructions were.

The next part of the message meant that she was going to cover my shift and NO reply was needed, but because of her typo, my fever, and the first part of the message, I thought she DID want a response (and a response to her cell phone), so I responded. First I texted. Then I called, because I hadn't received a return call and she'd just said in her text that if I got no return call, I should call her cell. *headdesk*

I am usually better about deciphering PM's notes, but when I am half-awake and feverish, I am not exactly at my best. Plus she apparently expected me to read her mind and realize that I was supposed to call the store to get any missing details, since she'd already explained everything to the people there. Given that during previous schedule emergencies, the people at the store have often known nothing of what arrangements other coworkers were attempting to privately hash out, I don't see how that was as obvious as she thought it was. But I will keep it in mind for the future.

Miscommunication all around. :-(
