You may or may not have noticed, but when I am trying to write toward a specific prompt or challenge, I often end up with two stories for the price of one: first the actual prompt response, and then, sometime later, a related fic based on the rambling I scribbled while trying to find the right approach to the main story. I have done that at least three times for Yuletide, once for a Harry/Hermione challenge, and once for Femgenficathon (though in that last case, the ancillary stories are still not finished). Three of my previous remixes have also produced, directly or indirectly, more than one story -- though again, only one actual prompt response.
This seems to be happening again with my 2011 remix. The several hundred words I have written while trying to find the entry point will most likely not end up in the finished product, but are interesting enough in their own right that I want to write a couple little world-building vignettes based on them, or at least expound upon them in an essay post. And they have pretty much nothing to do with the actual story I am remixing -- they are more by way of thought experiments to flesh out the background of the character whose POV I've chosen to use for my remix -- but because there is an obvious relationship between my eventual remix and the ancillary ideas, I can't tidy them up and post them until May.
So not fair. *sulks*
