Today was a day of various and sundry things, none particularly connected to each other.
1. We had English muffins and soft-boiled eggs for breakfast. I washed the dishes afterward -- I have been washing or drying after several meals, and have been setting the table for most of them. We don't have a dishwasher in the cabin so all dishes are done by hand. (We did get in a washer and dryer several years ago when the Cass Lake laundromat had been closed for a while and we were tired of having to drive to Bemidji to do laundry; the Cass Lake laundromat then reopened under new management, but time does not run in reverse. This year's innovation is air conditioning -- one machine downstairs in the living room, another upstairs in the master bedroom. Wonders may never cease.)
2. We all went over to the mainland to dispose of trash (the Star Island Protective League has a collective dumpster at the marina), dispose of recycling (in the Cass Lake municipal dumpsters), buy groceries, and buy some beer and box wine... which I had to pay for, since Dad had forgotten his wallet on the island and you need both money and ID to buy alcohol. Whoops. :-)
3. Dad and I headed out with the big clippers and a saw to finish clearing the deadfall we worked on yesterday. Along the way, we also cut up and rolled aside a tree that had fallen overnight on a different section of the path. Just as we finished up the swampy deadfall, a thunderstorm moved in from the west so we hurried home without doing anything about the path issues near the east portage. We arrived before the rain began, whereupon I promptly took a shower and changed clothes, since I was soaked in sweat. It's not fun doing hard physical work in 85F degree weather and nearly 80% humidity! (Also I was bitten by at least five mosquitoes, despite my bug spray. In some cases, they got inside my clothes. In others, I think I just sweated off the spray. Ah well, it's the North Woods. Mosquitoes come with the territory.
4. I successfully completed three more crosswords, from a collection edited by Will Shortz that Mom bought in Bemidji yesterday. They were all classed as "easy," but I feel I am learning the shorthand tricks used in the clues, so hopefully by the time I read the "medium" puzzles, they will be more intuitive for me.
5. Dad and I once again went down to the dock to watch distant thunderstorms light up the horizon with lightning though the sky directly over us was mostly clear and we once again saw the Milky Way. I plan to study some star maps tomorrow afternoon in hopes that we will get clear skies again Sunday or Monday night.
6. I am now 80% of the way through Wolf Hall, which continues to be well-written and intriguing. I must borrow Bring Up the Bodies (the sequel) from the library when I get home, and perhaps look into Hilary Mantel's other work.
