Ran into more political issues in "Apartment Manager," so chapter 16 is delayed until tomorrow.

Also, Mom and I took Dad out to the Garlic Rose for his birthday dinner. They don't like to go by themselves, since couples tend to get placed in rather cramped and exposed tables in the center of the room, and they much prefer being against a wall. So they took shameless advantage of my presence to wrangle a better table. (Not that I complained -- the Garlic Rose is a good restaurant! Their bread dip is to die for.)

I had veal garsala (no idea if that spelling is correct) with a wine and garlic sauce, shiitake mushrooms, cooked spinach, and some really good scalloped potatos with cheese. And a glass of red wine, because that was what we brought with us.

Speaking of wine... After several years of occasional experimentation, I have concluded that I much prefer white wine to red wine, probably for the same reason I preferred green grapes to red grapes, back when I could still eat them without having a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. There's something in the skins of red grapes that just does not taste good to me, and that... sharpness?... gets emphasized in wine.

This is not to say that I dislike all red wines and like all whites, but there is a definite trend going on.

Anyway, then we came home and had pflaumenkuchen, which (with the notable exceptions of really good cheesecake, rich chocolate brownies, and chocolate ice cream) is the best dessert on earth. The usual translations are 'plum pie' or 'plum cake,' but those both give a misleading idea of what it's like, so we tend to call it by the original German name.
