Today's lesson was "I Live in the Universe," which is short and sweet. You spread a sparkly black cloth backdrop on the floor, hand around several small laminated pictures, and do the whole "where do you live?" thing in iterations of increasing size and inclusiveness.
So. "I live at XXX Whatever St, which is in Ithaca, which is in Tompkins County, which is in New York, which is in the USA, which is in North America, which is on the earth, which is in the solar system, which is in the Milky Way, which is in the universe." Elaborate as necessary, get the kids to participate in each step, and have them place the relevent laminated pictures on the cloth as you go.
Then ask some questions about the universe, and talk about how even if we come from different towns, we're all still from the USA; even if we come from different countries, we're all still from the earth; even if we meet aliens some day, we'll all be from the same universe; and isn't it cool that we're all connected?
Simple and sweet. :-)
After snack, I asked the kids to draw pictures of where they lived, and then, since we still had time, we did arts-and-crafts with beads and wire taken from the supply closet that (helpfully) adjoins our classroom.
Only two kids today. I blame the combination of Columbus Day weekend, beautiful weather, and a guest minister.
