I never intended to become a store clerk. (I'm not sure what I did intend to do as a day job, but I'm sure this wasn't it. I think I tended to picture myself as a secretary, teacher, or librarian when I thought about careers at all.) But I actually like my current job, most of the time. It gets me out of the house, it forces me to interact with people, it has a lot of detail-oriented tasks, and it does not involve the temptation of a computer with an internet connection.

But oh god, some days just smash me flat like a steamroller.

Start with me tiptoeing around the edge of a cold. Add two days of inadequate sleep.

Then hit the store with the following: newspapers delayed three hours because the delivery driver hit a deer and then had a flat tire; a massive Haddon House shipment left unfinished from last night (I ran out of time yesterday); a map shipment; the book call-in list; paperwork; the twice-monthly petty cash check; an instant lottery ticket shipment; a transfer request; a greeting card shipment; cash-up and a trip to the bank for change; everything on the daily list; maintenance and more maintenance; and the Gesty inventory. Plus annoying college students buying tobacco.

I swear, I got maybe half an hour to relax in an eight-and-a-half hour shift. (It's nine hours with a half-hour lunch break.)
