Right at the moment, I despise BW beyond the telling of it.

(This will pass. But just for now, I'm going to wallow in pettiness.)

See, twice a day we pull the drawers from the registers, inventory the cigarettes and lottery tickets, and write up a deposit. This is called cash up. Morning cash up is done with the drawers from the previous night, and afternoon cash up is done with the drawers from the morning. (Afternoon is more complicated getting started, because you have to deal with customers while swapping drawers, but morning is a touch more complicated in calculation because you have to subtract stuff from the lottery machine print-outs.)

Anyway, BW and MS are learning to do cash up, and AO (who was downsized from her other job) has come back to us part-time and is relearning the procedure. This meant that this afternoon, when BW was scheduled to do cash up, there was nobody around who was 100% sure of what he or she was doing. Also, both BW and MS tend to spaz under stress, and AO gets flustered. (I spaz too, but not over cash up!)

So BW went blithely off and screwed up the drawers, the deposit, and the lottery sheet. By the time AO went back to help him (since she had been busy attempting to check in and price the H. J. Bailey order), it was a giant tangle. She got the drawers fixed by the time I came in at 3:50pm... but you have to realize that BW started at about 2:20pm, so they'd already spent an hour and a half trying to get this done.

Cash up is not supposed to take more than 40 minutes. MS, who'd been stuck out front alone and inundated with customers, was understandably frazzled.

Anyway, MS and I managed to get the early evening list done on time, pretty much by the skin of our teeth, and then I spent 6:00pm to 8:30pm playing catch-up on stuff that hadn't been done earlier, as well as trying to untangle the rest of BW's cash up mess. I ended up having to white-out whole swathes of the lottery sheet, and rewrite the main page because it was so screwed up. And I'm still not sure I got everything fixed, because BW's numerical handwriting SUCKS and he does the lottery sheets wrong when he's trying to record the end of a book of tickets.

(For example, there are 100 tickets in a book of $5 tickets, so if you start the shift on 98 and end on 03 of the next book, you record it like so: 101-98, and 03-01. BW writes it as 03-98. Then he leaves the next line blank, like so: __-01.)

Today he went back and crossed out his numbers, wrote over some others, and attempted to fill in all the lines, with the upshot that I had to guess whether he'd written 05 or 06 for one ticket. If I was right to pick 05, the lottery worked out perfectly this morning (compensating +4/-4 errors on instant and daily pay-outs, and compensating +2/-2 errors on instant and daily tickets sold) and we are inexplicably +$5.00 in cash. If I was wrong, there will be a compensating -$5.00 lottery error for this evening, which JM will presumably deal with tomorrow morning.

...

Anyway, I did eventually get everything done except for the HJB order. I figure AO and I can deal with that tomorrow.
