I am on the second day of a three-day weekend. Bliss!
My parents and their dog came up last night to visit, ostensibly for my birthday; it's easier for them to travel on weekends, since my mom still works. (My dad occupies an indefinite status somewhere between 'unemployed' and 'freelance researcher.' At the moment his main project is attempting to assemble and co-edit an encyclopedia of mass spectrometry, but it's rather difficult to measure his progress... especially since he's been telling me for over a year that any week now he'll have a list of people about whom no one has agreed to write, and whom I should research. He finally gave me ONE name last night. As this person is a relatively obscure researcher who only seems to have published in German, I'm not surprised no one wanted to write a one page biographical sketch and summary of his life's work. *plots to do research at Cornell sometime soonish*)
Anyway, we went to Rogue's Harbor Inn for dinner; the service was a bit slow, but cheerful, and the food was excellent. Then we came back to my apartment and had apple cake for dessert.
Today, after my dad presented my mom with the boquet I'd surreptitiously bought yesterday and hidden in my unused closet, we had breakfast at Friendly's and dropped off two boxes of old books at the Friends of the Library book sale warehouse, we visited the Museum of the Earth, which is a local natural history museum run by the Paleontological Research Institute (PRI) and affiliated with Cornell. They were running special programming all this week, in celebration of Charles Darwin's 200th birthday (Feb. 12th), so we were able to attend a presentation on the Creation Museum near Cincinnati, which was interesting, to say the least. The presenter, Dr. Jason Wiles, had gone there mostly to see what it was like (from a scientist's perspective) and he reported on his experience, rather like a travel guide.
After lunch, we dropped by Six Mile Creek Vineyard, just east of town, for a wine tasting. Because it was Valentine's Day, we also got some free chocolate samples to go with our wine samples. Mmm, chocolate....
All in all, I'd call it a good visit. :-)
