I'm doing [livejournal.com profile] thirtyforthree again, this time for Kira Sakuya/Mudo Setsuna/Mudo Sara from Kaori Yuki's Angel Sanctuary. There will be spoilers in nearly every theme -- given the characters, it's nearly impossible to avoid them! -- and a lot of potentially objectionable content. This is because the source manga has a lot of potentially objectionable content. If incest squicks you, or you know you'll be bothered by some extremely strange and often negative interpretations of Judeo-Christian theology, you probably won't want to read any of these stories.

With that said...

Theme: #30 - Touch
Warnings: spoilers
Notes: This ficlet is set pre-manga.

The Transient and the Eternal: Touch
---------------------------------------------

It still surprised Kira, some mornings, that he had hands. He stared at them in the mirror and wondered why his fingers didn't draw blood with every touch against his stolen skin.

He shied away from his father as he left for school instead of slapping aside the old man's outstretched hand. He laid his books flat against his desk and pressed the pages down with only the heels of his palms. He sidestepped Kato's cheerful punch and sent the idiot away with barbed silence. He fought down nicotine cravings and refused to touch his cigarettes or his lighter, afraid his nails might turn to razor steel and draw betraying sparks.

If this was humanity, this muddle of irrationality, he wanted to cast it off again.

And then he walked out of school and found Setsuna waiting for him. A smile and a call of "Kira-sempai!" floated through the air, followed by Setsuna, who settled in to walk beside him, a bright, solid presence in his soul. Their footsteps matched exactly, habitually, and Kira's feet turned a corner without any conscious direction on his part.

"Let's go surprise Sara," he said, drawing a cigarette from his pocket and cupping a hand around the curl of flame as he flicked his lighter. "Your mom won't be home for a few hours, right?" The mix of elation, guilt, and shock on Setsuna's face was priceless, every time.

Kira reached out his free hand to ruffle Setsuna's hair, and smiled.

Back in real life, I received a package from the Science Fiction Book Club on Monday. I was a little surprised, because I hadn't ordered anything recently, and I am scrupulous about responding to their featured selections (those are a sort of 'if you don't explicitly tell us NOT to send these books, you're buying them by default' deal).

It turns out they had sent me two books I never ordered. So I wrote an explanatory letter, resealed the box, and sent it back today. Unfortunately, because I'd opened the box, I had to pay return shipping charges at the post office. I really hope the SFBC does the polite thing and deducts that cost from my account as well as removing the original bill for the books and the shipping and handling charges.

This is actually only the third time since 1997 that the SFBC has screwed up anything with my account or my orders, and one of those two prior incidents may actually have been my fault -- I was going on vacation and might well have accidentally ordered the same book twice in the confusion. It's just very annoying when things like this happen, and I am not particularly pleased that I am paying for their mistake.

Ah well. Such is life.
