reading! yay!
Apr. 7th, 2009 11:17 pmThings that make me happy: beginning to put up the new book shipment and discovering that we have copies of Turn Coat, the new Dresden Files novel, in the store! Where we give 25% discounts on all books, all the time!
I bought it on lunch break and was 1/3 of the way through by closing. And now that I have caught up on the internet, I am going off to read the rest. I have to get up at a proper morning hour to get to my dentist appointment, but I don't care. Sleep is for the weak!

Date: 2009-04-08 04:06 pm (UTC)I found myself noticing gender issues more than in some previous books: the words Butcher uses to refer to female characters, and the situations he places them in, are almost invariably sexualized, often when there is no particular plot, character, or thematic reason for that sexualization to be there (or, even if there is a reason for the sex, for it to be so blatant or described in the particular phrasings Butcher chooses). The first few books in the series are bad that way, but I'd thought they were getting better as Harry got smacked in the face with his chauvinism a few times. Maybe I'm just paying more attention this time, or maybe they're getting worse again. I dunno.
But the plot is great, the dialogue is great, the characters are engaging, and Harry is still angsting about moral issues (and Murphy calls him on some of his lone hero bullshit), so I am willing to (mostly) forgive the dubious gender stuff.
