First, the good news: both my flights departed and arrived safely and on time, though the second leg (Detroit to Minneapolis/St. Paul) was so crowded there was not a single unoccupied seat on the plane. Also, the weather has been lovely, my parents and Ardis are fine, the drive up to Cass Lake went smoothly, and we had a nice birthday dinner for my dad at The Boulders restaurant in Walker tonight.

Now the bad news: my Uncle Bob, who was in the hospital being treated for a nasty bout of graft-vs-host disease while recovering from his bone marrow transplant, took a turn for the worse last night after we visited him. He had incredible trouble breathing and was coughing up blood. The doctors and nurses determined that he had caught a bacterial infection via one of his IV lines, and he is currently in a medically induced coma in the ICU while they try to stamp out the infection. Assuming he recovers from that, he will still have to fight the GVH disease, and he is very weak and enervated, so god only knows what will happen next.

My Aunt Jan is with him as much as possible. Tomorrow she will meet Ardis and some family friends for lunch, after which Ardis will call us up at the cabin and report. If things look bad, my dad will drive down to the Twin Cities to be with Jan. (We're not sure if he'll take our minivan or if we'll drive him to Bemidji and he'll rent a car.) If Bob seems to be stable or improving, Dad will stay here until Tuesday, when we will all drive south anyway.

Other than that, it's a good vacation so far. It's just that an uncle in the ICU and quite possibly dying is a fairly large 'other than that' to deal with.

I am selfishly glad I did get to see and talk to him a little last night before he fell asleep.

Thank you. So far, he is still alive, but apparently the doctors say the next twelve hours may be critical. So we are all kind of preoccupied. :-(
