You know what I wish?
I wish ff.net had an exclude function in their sorting system. Right now you can search for stories that include one or two specific characters, but you cannot search for stories that exclude a specific character. This means that if I search for stories that include Zuko, I either have to search for Zuko-and-Someone stories (when I am not necessarily interested in said stories) or I have to wade through scores of pages of Zutara stories when all I want to read is gen.
It is enough to make me scream.
(This is my problem with Zutara, btw. I am totally cool with it existing, though it's not my cup of tea. But I am not cool with its existence making it next to impossible to find the stories I am actually interested in reading.)
On that note, does anyone have good Zuko-centric gen recs? I like family stories, friendship stories, adventure stories, and stories that deal with world-building or the mechanics of bending. I like ensemble stories as well, and I do like Zuko-Katara friendship stories -- just not romance. I am trying to avoid romance here. (Even though Maiko is love! *ahem* Sorry.)
Help, please?

Date: 2009-11-11 09:46 pm (UTC)Oh, and I've got some gen Avatar fic (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/55419/) - one's Iroh/Royal family centric and one's cast centric, if you want to check it out.

Date: 2009-11-11 11:34 pm (UTC)I'm sure I'm much more fond of ship fic than you, but I still like good gen on a regular basis—it just seems like when there's any romance in a fic it's the central thrust of the whole thing, which can get old, so I definitely know how you feel. :\
I think I've read most of the ones recced thus far, but I'll have to check my hd for any avatar fics I've saved when I get home—you can check out these (http://www.bishink.org/atla.html) though; not very many, or particularly long, but still good. :)

Date: 2009-11-12 12:49 pm (UTC)D'oh! It just now occurs to me that some of those are set a bit further along than I think you are now, and if not precisely spoileriffic, could be hard to understand. ^^;;;
Looks like I haven't saved much, but this (http://www.yuletidetreasure.org/archive/25/dayof.html) is just cute (though not about zuko)....

A bunch of ficlets by DigitalTart. Most of them are set in season 3 (and there are some pretty heavy spoilers in some of them), so I'll link to the ones that aren't below:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3738296/5/As_My_Own_Son

A Thousand Miles (http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/25/athousand.html) by Therienne (http://therienne.livejournal.com/)
Zuko + Iroh oneshot. It's really nicely written.
Bittersweet (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4416251/1/) by Sugeatarc
This one is set after the end of the series, but doesn't have too many spoilers.
Exile (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4487314/1/Exile) by Sugetearc
This one is still on my to-read list, but since it's so rare to find gen multichaps, I have it bookmarked anyway. XDD
Intimate Enemies (http://reimars.livejournal.com/29284.html#cutid1) by Rayemars (http://reimars.livejournal.com/)
This is a Mai-centric oneshot, and Zuko is only barely there. You should probably only read this after Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai have been introduced properly, but that shouldn't be too far away now.
I put this up here because it's amaaaaazing.
Visual Emphasis (http://reimars.livejournal.com/29119.html#cutid1) and its sequel, Ties That Bind (http://reimars.livejournal.com/33905.html#cutid1), both also by Rayemars. HIGHLY SPOILERIFFIC, so don't read until you reach the end of Book 2.
No Right Angles (http://redbrunja.livejournal.com/82412.html#cutid1) by RedBrunja (http://redbrunja.livejournal.com/)
Also majorly spoileriffic, and vaguely shippy to boot, but I think you'll like it anyway.
I had resolved to not rec you spoiler-y things, but. I gave in >_>
I guess you should just bookmark them for now and read them later.
