I opened ch. 14 of "Secrets" last night and took a stab at Ginny and Daphne's argument/reconciliation thing. As I see it, Ginny is almost solely responsible for the start of their fight (she jumped to conclusions upon seeing Daphne act pleasant to Draco during the Sorting banquet, and then was egregiously nasty in their first Potions lesson), but Daphne is almost solely responsible for continuing it (Ginny was willing to ignore Daphne's existence thereafter, but Daphne kept pushing -- dungbombs, the Valentine, making Ginny and Electra's potion explode, the spat during the Dueling Club... wait, I don't remember the details of that one, must look it up... *sigh*), and although Daphne was the one usually egging the fight onward, Ginny (once annoyed all over again), did not do anything to make peace; she just insulted Daphne more. So they both have stuff to apologize for.
At the moment, this is taking the form of set-piece declamations. Very unrealistic. But at least the words are on the page in some form?
The chapter is now at 11,325 words. And I still have to get through the ride back to London on the Hogwarts Express (that scene is non-negotiable), and maybe a Ginny-settles-into-the-Burrow scene (that one is negotiable; I might summarize it in the epilogue as Ginny talks to Bill). I refuse to have this chapter be longer than 12,500 words in final draft.
...
I foresee a LOT of editing in my future.

In other writing news,
valles_uf's request!fic was feeling kind of flat to me, and I was having trouble working three extra crew-members into the plot, so I took a few days and did little personality sketches of the ship's crew and their interactions with each other, and I am reworking the opening sections so the world-building is coherent and stuff. Then I will bring on the pirates, and the lone ship standoff thing. (Which I have a twist for, actually. *grin*)
