I would like to state, for the record, that coming up with plausible-sounding (not even plausible, necessarily, just plausible-sounding) jutsu as the plot demands, working out how they would be experienced by the user and the target, and then describing all this information concisely and coherently, is a goddamn pain in the neck.

No special point. Just FYI.

(The same goes for any system of 'magic,' actually. *hates on various WIPs*)

Tolkien had it easy. He was vauge enough about what his magic actually was that it could do almost anything. Wheras more modern writers typically start loading up on rules and restrictions that give exactly the problems you cite.

Stating that information concisely and coherently however? Yeah, that's the REAL trick.
