99F in the shade today in downtown Ithaca. 105 in the sun.

*melts*

I went to bed at 10pm last night and couldn't properly get to sleep until about 3am -- before that it was all uneasy half doze and restless tossing and turning in a vain attempt to expose more of my body to the wind from my poor, much-abused fan.

Around 2:30am I briefly attempted to use my computer, on the theory that if I couldn't sleep, I might at least try writing something.

My computer bluescreened from overheating. This in the "cool" of the night, with a fan on high speed aimed directly at it from one foot away, after the same fan had been pulling cooler air into the room for six hours.

...

I spent the morning up in the computer lab at Uris Library (air conditioned, thank god), 11am-6pm at work (also air conditioned, though we couldn't get the temperature to stay below 78F even when we set the thermostat all the way down to 70), and am now camping out in the public library until I am forced to leave.

I suspect I will repeat this general pattern tomorrow and Saturday, though without the evening library retreat, since I will be working until 9pm.

I can't work on "Weregild" because the opening paragraphs of part 16 are trapped on my home computer, which I cannot turn on. I suppose I will work on my NFE fic instead. I have figured out one half of the plot -- what people are trying to do, what the complications are, and how they resolve the problem -- but the other remains, alas, rather opaque. Once I get that worked out, though, the writing should be easy. I have all my characters and 90% of the world-building in place, after all. :-)

...

Every year there are about two weeks when I would cheerfully maim someone for an air conditioner. And every year, once those two weeks are past, I say to myself, "It's only two weeks. Do I really need an air conditioner for two weeks?" and so I don't buy one. Then summer comes around again and I call myself ten kinds of idiot while I attempt not to die of heatstroke.

This year, I am afraid it may be three weeks of hideous overheating.

...

I want it to be autumn already, damn it.

I hear from news that the heat wave is horrible there and you can survive so far with only fan? Just wow.

I can't imagine how hot this heatwave is, but here, 33 C which is usual in Jakarta is quite hard for me who come from inland....

You're getting typical Georgia summer weather up there! I would not be able to survive in the South if it weren't for the AC.

Lucky you. One of my coworkers says it was over 90 at 9 am this morning. I know that it was well over 100 at 3 pm... not counting the heat index, which took it from "obscene" to "unholy".
