Mountains of background reading and/or knowledge, well rounded OCs and faultless grammar. Also interesting scenarios which either take an awfully long time to come up with, or are so unbearably, simplistically awesome that we are all kicking ourselves wondering 'why didn't I think of that?!'.

A lot of what looks like research is actually stuff I read years before for no particular reason, then threw into a later story for verisimilitude because I am too lazy to do new research when I don't have to. *wry* This is a longstanding pattern -- when I was in high school, for example, I chose research paper topics that would let me interview one of my dad's colleagues (for Thomas Edison) and my uncle (for the US Census), because I didn't want to deal with having to find experts in unfamiliar areas.

Amazing world building (backed by research). Also simple, beautiful language that shows us a lot about the characters without it getting poetical and angsty.

I used to try writing in a more poetical style, a la Patricia McKillip, but I just cannot do that. The words lie flat and dead on the page, like badly painted plastic models of what should be color and life. So I make a virtue of necessity and aim for simplicity and clarity instead. *wry* (I am always afraid I will lapse into sounding like a textbook, which my sister has accused me of from time to time. There are reasons I use fewer semicolons these days than I used to...)
