thoughts about my thoughts about Calormen
Sep. 9th, 2011 08:02 pmI said I would make a post of my Thoughts About Calormen, specifically my head!canon world-building and the pantheon I created. I figured I'd have to pull together notes that were in fragments tacked onto the chapter files of various stories I've written or am writing. And I do have a lot of such fragmentary notes...
But added up, I think they come to maybe 20% of what I am implicitly leaning on in my stories. The other 80% either never made it from my head to a page, or is buried in the middle of my fiction instead of tidily summarized in background notes. So I am writing all that out explicitly for the first time and trying to make sure it hangs together and makes sense. This is taking longer than I'd hoped.
You know when I said that it was difficult to keep "The Courting Dance" from degenerating into a ten-page paper on the history of Archenland? I was not kidding. And now I have free reign to write a ten-page paper on the history of Calormen, which of course means it will try its damndest to turn into a twenty-page paper if I am not vigilant in trimming it down.
For reference, I am currently over a thousand words into a brief summary history of Calormen, and I have only reached the year 350 or so. I won't hit Rabadash until around the year 1000. And that is not even getting into the sections on culture and religion, which I am planning to append separately at the end! *headdesk*
There's a reason I usually don't try to write most of this stuff out in detail...
