Technical question from a person who knows possibly less than nothing about computer coding:

How do you make the AO3 display different font faces and colors within the text of a story? I know this is possible because I've seen other people do it in their stories. But the site doesn't recognize the old html font code, and the only thing I know about CSS is that it is called CSS and has something to do with websites and display and stuff, full stop.

I need this trick to make the chatlog portions of my Homestuck porn fic display correctly.

Thank you for any help!

Okay, what you need to do is add this to each P tag as appropriate. Brackets substituted for angle braces, so this actually shows up.

[p style="color:#900;"]

Or whatever hex code or color you want. You can use "red" and "green" and etc, as well; in that case, leave off the #.

If you have a long block of text that needs to be a given color you can add the style="etc" to a div tag that goes around the whole block instead of adding it to every P tag.

A div is an html tag, a lot like a p tag. A div is a box you can put around other tags.

Yes, you can do font this way too. That would be:

[p style="color:green; font-family:Courier;"]

AO3 has custom stylesheets that can be applied to fics, there should be a Homestuck skin under "Public Works." When you're using it, you can get pesterchum formatting by adding, for example, [span class="karkat"] [/span] around the text. But with, y'know, triangle brackets. It works with all of the trolls, the beta kids, davesprite and jadesprite. "black" and "white" get you the basic black courier font and Doc Scratch's text, respectively.

I think that covers most of it?
