Wordcount is now 6,100, for a gain of about 850. I got through the damned buy-a-third-horse thing and am now en route to the actual war. I also figured out what the emotional/character arc of the story is -- always helpful! -- and went back to work it in to the opening scenes so they match up with the conclusion of the story. I think the lack of that glue may have been part of my problem making myself care about this story for so long. It's hard to get interested in writing something that's just a string of scenes with no real point. So either I had to make the story be explicitly about world-building (which... really did not work with the closing scenes), or I had to come up with some kind of internal conflict for Ilgamuth so he wasn't just sitting there like a lump until the last section in Tashbaan.
I have emailed my files to myself so I can work on them Thursday and Friday in NJ. I suspect I will still be finishing down to the wire Saturday evening (if you sense a pattern in my writing habits, you would not be wrong!), but I think I may actually be able to finish, which even yesterday I was not at all sure of.
So there is that!
And now to bed, because I have a four hour drive tomorrow evening in the dark and I want to be well rested. :-)
