Homestuck update!!!
Oct. 22nd, 2012 12:22 amI FINALLY got the blasted thing to load. Victory!
So okay, none of the pre-Scratch trolls are going to help Meenah at all, though Porrim is at least helping Kanaya in her quest to revive their species and Aranea is finally getting around to looking for Calliope instead of dragging her exposition booth around and explaining backstory to everyone. And now Meenah has just run into Vriska, Tavros, and John.
Backtracking a little, is anyone else worried about how Vriska described her own plan? I mean, listen to this:
VRISKA: Not that I'd have it any other way. This just sounds like the 8est plan to me. Why 8other messing around with an army of ghostly dipshits, or some shy magic alien when you can go str8 for the ultim8 weapon?
VRISKA: Hell, may8e I'll just walk right up to him, one-shot the guy and end it all right there.
VRISKA: That's how a real pro goes a8out 8usiness. You take any shortcut you find.
Does that sound like the way she tried to take down Jack, or does that sound like the way she tried to take down Jack? And that backfired big time, plus Lord English is, as we all know, a Lord of Time. I have a terrible feeling that Vriska is going to find this weapon and then deliver it right into his hands, just like she delivered Terezi and Karkat to Jack in the alternate timeline Terezi cut short by killing Vriska. And this is why Lord English is being weirdly helpful in the ways he's destroying the Furthest Ring -- he needs to make sure Vriska finds the weapon he's using to cause the destruction that she's using to find the weapon. Time loops, people! They did not stop being a thing that exists!
Let's see, what else.
Gamzee <3< Terezi is now a thing! I didn't think that she hated him enough for an actual relationship, or that he hated her back at all, but apparently they do. Who knew? And yeah, that would upset Karkat something fierce if he knew. I am also fascinated by the revelation that Rose and Gamzee have been meeting in secret. Gamzee was in the same room as Karkat... but was he there before Karkat fell asleep, or did he only sneak in afterward? This is important!
(I am also amused by how stupidly awkward Dave and Karkat are around each other. Do they ever have conversations that manage NOT to derail into weird innuendo that neither really seems to mean?)
Dave is clearly not taking this meteor trip well AT ALL. He has nothing to do that he considers important, his relationship with Terezi (whatever it is) may be falling apart (*weeps*), he's awkward around Rose, he's only just now after two years really getting to know Kanaya beyond "oh, hey, the vampire troll," and basically he seems to be going stir crazy. In contrast, Rose is developing her relationship with Kanaya, she's busy with a bunch of projects relating to the game and to their quality of life on the meteor, and she seems to be up to her neck in secrets. It's interesting because neither of them was what I'd call well adjusted before the game, but Rose seems to have decided to drop a bunch of her reflexive passive-aggressive tendencies and be proactive in both her personal and "professional" lives, as it were, while Dave is just sinking further and further into the pit of his personal issues.
(I wish Dave had mentioned Jade as well as John, but then again John is the one he talked pop culture with and that was the context of the conversation. With Jade, he was actually creating new stuff -- music and art -- rather than strictly riffing on bad pop culture tropes. Actually, on that note I think talking with Jade would be better for him than talking with John, even beyond the way that Jade is better in general at thwapping him with a metaphorical newspaper when he's being a jerk.)
Latula and Terezi have the exact same reaction to Damara approaching Mituna and Karkat. That is probably meant as Terezi/Karkat subtext, which is a little predictable, but okay. Karkat's gotten over some of his issues in the past two years of in-story time, and his complete unreadiness to deal sensibly with Terezi (his attempt at scheduling quadrant vacilation being a hilarious case in point) was my chief objection there. I am still leery of that ship in fanfiction because of the "he deserves her love, so obviously she has to give in to him!" schtick it can so easily fall into, but if that issue is avoided they can be very cute.
Kankri continues to be a massive dickhead. Wow, he is the exact opposite of helpful, no matter what he thinks or says.
It was interesting to learn about Rufioh, Horuss, and Damara, though they don't seem hugely plot-relevant at this point... except in the sense that Horuss is now under Meulin's influence (and she's under Kurloz's influence), and Damara seems to have had some connection to Lord English that led her first to sabotage her teammates and then to help them scratch their session. Also, Meenah continues to be a wonderful mix of breathtaking self-centeredness and genuine attempts to get along with people and do the right thing. She feels like a very real, three-dimensional person and I love her for it. :-)
Also, for no particular reason, this quote is where I well and truly lost it and could not stop laughing for nearly five minutes:
You put the phoned-in item back in the chest. But a little later, Meenah sneaks back over here, takes the boonbuck, and stashes it in her nautically themed, hot pink clam shell shaped purse, which we have never seen her rendered with, but is totally something that exists in the most canonical way possible. There, now you know.
Andrew Hussie, how are you even real? :-D
(That is not even getting into the way Damara can enter most of the places people other than Meenah are not supposed to be able to get to -- and neither Rose nor Dave catches on that she's dangerous, which strikes me as a bad sign -- or the complete ridiculousness of Hussie's attempts at expositing to Damara after purchasing the exposition stand from Aranea... with Cronus's ring that Meenah used to con him out of the Kickstarter profits. *dies laughing* I am really not sure how many of the in-jokes are going to hold up years from now -- the basic structure of the story is more than sound, of course, but some of the interactions with fandom are very much of a particular time and place (insofar as the internet has any quality of "place"), and those may become incomprehensible quite fast. Then again, they're only a small part of the humor.)

Now I am going to try drawing stuff for "Trollstuck," despite the lateness of the hour. We shall see how that goes.
