general life update
Feb. 16th, 2013 11:54 pmThings that have occurred over the past week:
My parents came up to visit on Wednesday and Thursday, which I conveniently had mostly off from work -- this was the backup plan after last weekend's snowstorm disrupted the original plan. We did some chores Wednesday afternoon (groceries, replacing my couch cover), then went to see Argo at Cinemapolis (Ithaca's art house movie theater, as opposed to the multiplex at the mall), then celebrated my birthday via a dinner at Rogue's Harbor up in Lansing.
Dottie, their dog, slept in my laundry basket overnight. Dogs are adorable. They are also weird. We set up her actual bed in my bedroom, but apparently it held no appeal compared to my dirty sheets. O_o
On Thursday we ate separate breakfasts before my parents arrived at my apartment, faffed around for nearly an hour because we are chronically incapable of timely departures, and then drove up the west side of Cayuga Lake to visit a few vineyards. We ended up making fewer stops than intended because at Thirsty Owl Wine Company, the woman who was staffing the tasting counter turned out to be the other person involved in the horrible car crash my coworker AO's son Josh was in a year and a half ago, and talking about that ate up a surprising amount of time. Anyway, we ate lunch at the cafe attached to Americana Vineyards, after which Mom, Dad, and Dottie headed south for NJ while I headed in to work.
Friday was kind of a boring day. I worked 9-5, which is not my favorite shift. I am really, really, really not a morning person, and because my usual schedule reflects that, it's hard for me to effectively adjust my bedtime even when I know I have to get up early. (Yes, yes, I realize 8:15am is not that early by most people's standards. I don't care. It's early by mine.) BP, our new employee, had his second shift that night, as part of his crash refresher course in how to close the store. I trained him Monday night, PM trained him Friday, PB trained him Saturday... and this coming Monday he will close alone. *crosses fingers*
Today was the 15th Annual Chili Cook-off on the Commons, which you would think would bring a bunch of business to the smoke shop... but you would be wrong. I think it was even slower than a normal Saturday. Ah well.
I have never attended/participated in the cook-off myself for several reasons. First, I tend to be working and I don't want to spend my lunch break waiting in ridiculous lines for three-mouthful cups of chili -- the lines are so long I would be lucky to get three samples before I had to clock back in. Second, the years I have had the day off I haven't wanted to walk downtown when I could be lazy instead. And third, those lines and February weather are a BAD combination. But there are some non-chili aspects that I enjoy, such as the Girl Scouts who tend to set up a booth and sell cookies. I bought three boxes of Thin Mints and they are ALL MINE, PRECIOUS. *cackles gleefully*
Now I will attempt to go to bed because I have a stupidly long day tomorrow -- I am teaching RE from 10:30 to noon and then heading straight to work for a noon to 9pm shift. Bleh.

Date: 2013-02-18 04:23 am (UTC)I am only second-class Family, though. Unlike Gigi, who belonged to all four members of my nuclear family, Dottie is only my parents' dog -- they adopted her well after Vicky and I had left New Jersey. She knows me, she likes me, she trusts me, and she is much calmer with me than with random strangers (which is important since she's about 3/4 Jack Russell terrier), but when left alone with me she spends a lot of time staring forlornly out of windows waiting for her REAL people to come back.

I miss having a dog. :-/
