OMG, I have written 500 words of "Friends and Neighbors" today. This is the most I have managed to write in a day since that unfinished Aravis/Cor thing a couple weeks back, and I am so close to the end of the story that I can taste it. Maybe I will even manage to finish it tonight!
Oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please.
I so very badly need to create something that I can point to and say, "There, I made that. It did not exist until I decided it should, and then I sat down and brought it into being." Because that is the best feeling in the world and holy shit I need that right now.
*crosses fingers, returns to writing*
(7,100 words, fyi)
---------------
ETA: 7,400 words. The story has taken an alarming swerve into ridiculously saccharine emotional hurt/comfort between Yukiko and Naruto. Agh, what is it about those two that makes me so stupidly mushy? I am trying to make a point about ninja cunning as applied to civilian social relationships, not to woobify Naruto beyond recognition. (Though he is only seven years old, here. A certain level of adorable sugar-puff woobieness is inescapable. Curse small children and their built-in cuteness rays!)
---------------
ETA 2: 7,700 words. New favorite passage:
"What's fighting got to do with it? You can't make friends by hitting people," Naruto said.
"Maybe not with civilians, but it's a time-honored tradition among ninja," Yukiko assured him. Naruto pulled back and gave her a disbelieving look. "I swear by all the kami, that's how I got to be friends with my old genin team. Hoshi-sensei made us fight in three-way melee battles until we got sick of them and teamed up on him instead. And then we were friends."
"If you say so, Yukiko-neechan," Naruto said.
Yeah. :-D
---------------
ETA 3: 8,050 words. I am so close to the end. SO CLOSE. And yet the fic will just. not. wrap. up.
Goddammit, what do I have to do to reach a last line around here???
-----
ETA 4: Finished at 8,200 words! Victory is mine!! Ahahahaha!!!
Of course, now I have to go back and edit the blasted story -- this is particularly relevant since I wrote it over such an extended period of time and there are probably a bunch of narrative and thematic discontinuities -- but psssh, whatever, it is always easier to fix something that exists than to create that thing in the first place.
And now I am going to bed because it is half past midnight and I have a 9am shift in the morning.
Good night!

Date: 2013-02-23 05:27 pm (UTC)Friends and Neighbors is up now in beta draft. I will probably tidy it up a little more before I cross-post it to ff.net or anywhere else, but the basic structure is, I think, sound.
