There is a saying -- or at least a refrigerator magnet quote -- to the effect of: "Eat a live toad for breakfast and nothing worse will happen to you all day."

That is kind of how today went.

Basically, I arrived at work half an hour early thinking I could thereby allow JM to leave half an hour early which would be nice since she's been having to work late and disrupt her child care schedule a bunch lately. I clocked in, I came out to the front room, I grabbed a Coke for myself. While doing so, I noticed that the quart of half and half we keep in the little Coke cooler next to the coffeemaker for customers to use in their coffee was pretty low and didn't have a backup carton behind it.

So I went over to the large Snapple cooler to grab a replacement... and the cartons all had these weird brownish stains on top.

Strange.

There seemed to be water dripping down the front grill of the cooler.

Also strange.

And a funny fruity sugary smell... hey, wait a minute, I know what those signs mean! Obviously one of the Snapple bottles broke. Dammit. But that's an easy enough thing to fix. I looked up, quickly found a bottle that was entirely clear instead of filled with mysterious brown liquid, and began to remove it...

It shattered in my hands. It also left a large cylinder of ice on the shelf. And then I noticed another mysteriously empty bottle with shattermarks in the glass. And another. And another. And yet another. Probably ten in total.

All with those same cylinders of ice inside.

Oh, and three more bottles that hadn't actually broken but whose caps had popped off.

Yeah.

At some point overnight, the cooler thermostat malfunctioned and turned "cooler" into "freezer" -- at least on the left half of the machine -- with predictable consequences. Blecch.

Anyway, RE took all the unbroken bottles out back to clean, I picked out all the glass and scrubbed down the shelves and the base of the cooler, and then we put some plastic water bottles back on the bottom shelf just to have them on sale, but we left the rest of the lefthand shelves empty because we couldn't find a thermostat for the machine and thus had no way to guarantee the snap freeze wouldn't reoccur. The interior of the cooler still has that weird fruity sugary smell (as does the carpet in front, which got pretty thoroughly soaked by runoff), but there was no way I was going to scrub it down twice.

...

I found out later, via my coworker PB who stopped in to grab a drink on his way to his other job, that the cooler had been acting up Saturday afternoon as well, though that time it had been chilling drinks on the righthand side of the machine to the point where they were more like slush than liquid.

In summary, I left a note for my manager saying we need to call a mechanic.

And nothing worse did happen to me all day. :-|
