Ouroboros Mix recs, part 1
Mar. 24th, 2013 10:32 pmThere will be a part 2 sometime before Friday, but I have read approximately half the stories and thought I might as well post some recs now. There is no theme here, just some things I especially liked and wanted to share. (FYI, I didn't bother reproducing warnings or other tags -- they take up way more time and space than I have patience for on my journal -- so you will have to read those in the header information on AO3.)
Anyway.Twelve Eleven stories I like and think you might enjoy too!
-----
1. Afterparty: Jane and Dave debrief. Remix of Hollywood Shenanigans (by me!), 2,650 words.
This is a lovely story dealing with the aftermath of my quasi-fluffy Alpha!Dave-escorts-Jane-to-Hollywood fic, via a Pesterchum conversation between Jane and Dirk and an in-person meeting between Dave and Rose. The addition of Dave's POV adds new depth and angles to the events and nuances that flew over Jane's head in the original (and getting to see Alpha!Rose is a real treat!). Also, Jane is adorable, and the way Dirk is so obviously fishing for actual real-time stories of his bro is funny and sad at the same time, in the best Homestuck fashion.
-----
2. Negative Space: But there are these angles and flat planes on Roxy's body that disturb Jane. They speak of the things that have always been missing from Roxy's life until now, and Jane finds herself wanting to fill them for her. Jane/Roxy. Remix of Shapes by bramblePatch, 1,050 words.
This is adorable and warm and fluffy-sweet with an underlying past sorrow, and I want to roll around in it like a warm blanket. :-)
-----
3. Bloodborne Pathogen (Cordyceps Horrorshow Remix): Being a rainbow drinker isn't quite the same as all her books described. Kanaya<>Karkat. Remix of Unusual Blood Abnormalities by Xelfi, 4,000 words.
Drop dead gorgeous world-building, with the creepy-violent edge that Alternia always ought to have... plus semi-sentient parasitic fungi and both mind and body horror. Seriously, this is shivery awful awesome. Go read it immediately!
-----
4. Copacetic: In which Karkat frets about everything and is definitely not avoiding his moirail. Karkat<>Gamzee. Remix of Serendipity by bramblePatch, 4,600 words.
Because moirallegiance should work both ways, and while it's not pleasant to see Karkat twisting himself up, the way every other character (not just Gamzee) so obviously cares about his well-being is heartwarming.
-----
5. Share and Share Alike: That awkward moment when Dirk Strider really wants to read your smutfic starring him and his wannabe boyfriend. Remix of Feedback by capriciousTheosophist (orionCipher), 1,500 words.
Hey, writers. You know that nerve-wracking tension where you don't want to show your work to anyone and yet can't bear to wait to hear what they think of it? Calliope is beyond adorable when caught in that state. :-)
-----
6. things i've never seen before behind bolted doors: Dave and Karkat have a little fight over who pushed the buttons that swapped their species, and it turns into extensive scientific experimentation of a different kind altogether. Dave<3<Karkat, explicit sex. Remix of i can ride my bike with no handlebars by negativecosine, 3,500 words.
Scorching hot Dave/Karkat species swap porn. Do you really need any other reason?
-----
7. Inkstick (the Give My Bones Remix): GT: Dirk what is this?
TT: It’s my new ink.
Take one shaky step and bid your loneliness bye-bye; or, Dirk Strider, losing his rationality in fits and spurts.
Remix of Inkstick by t34lbloods (perculious), 6,300 words.
This does an amazing job of exploring what growing up in complete isolation in the middle of the ocean might have done to Dirk underneath his façade of calm and control. The ways he tries to reach out to people despite the barriers of time and space are simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming.
-----
8. No Army But My Own (the stars are gaslights remix): Jade gets political. Background Jade/Karkat and John/Feferi (or John<>Feferi?). Remix of Me and My Army by Elemental, 4,800 words.
Elemental's story is a chilling look at John and Feferi's response to a terrible moral conundrum. This story is Jade's response to their response. (And it is hilarious and awful and inspirational all at once.)
-----
9. I have to go get on her case for needless theatrics.: The end of the world is coming, and it's easier to see from certain universes than others. Remix of this is NOT an alien friendly zone!!! by suitablyskippy, 2,100 words.
Rose and Jade, and how to deal with dreams of the future. Lovely world-building, plus killer Rose voice and characterization.
-----
10. a little space striptease: Dirk puts on a little show for a friend, but certain articles of clothing prove difficult. Dirk & Jane. Remix of A Little Show Among Friends by tortoisegirl, 1,000 words.
It's Dirk and Jane talking about their mutual Thing for Jake and vowing to remain friends no matter what. Plus an adorably silly striptease. IN SPACE. :-D
-----
11. An Injured Body (The Biology Isn't Destiny Remix): Unspoken by either of them was that at eighteen, Rose was awfully old to be getting along without even any kind of temporary claim arrangement; most Subs had taken their first bracelets years ago. But Rose didn't believe in biological determinism.
Of course, Rose also didn't believe in spending her Saturday evenings on the floor with her forehead pressed to her mother's knees, trying to stave off wave after wave of overpowering nausea. Which presented a kind of dilemma.
Rose/Terezi. Remix of An Injured Body by biichan, 2,000 words.
Because it takes the tropes of BDSM AUs and treats them exactly the way Rose Lalonde would to, if she found herself trapped in such a world. (Terezi is equally sharp and perfect, as is Kanaya in a supporting role, but this is mostly Rose's show. And she is magnificent.)

So that's pretty much what I've been doing since Friday. :-)
Anyway.
