Random fic scraps I've written at work. I don't have dates for these -- I am not always as scrupulous about dating pages as I'd like to be -- so they go from shortest to longest.

Jade, isolated (100 words):

Dave, Rose, and John are the only humans Jade can really claim to know since her grandpa died. She talks to other people, of course, both online and via satellite phone -- she has to order supplies and reassure the people who run her grandpa's companies that she's okay and they can keep their jobs another month -- but that's just surface stuff. Those people only know Miss Harley. They don't know Jade.

And they don't lie sleeping in the towers of Prospit and Derse. They're not in her dreams. Their futures aren't part of her story.

Davesprite and wing repair (225 words):

"Dude. It's going to just... grow back? Like the whole thing?"

John's face is a study in blatant skepticism, as always. That kid is never gonna catch on to the laws of narrative causality -- which is a crying shame since he's starring in some kind of multiversal creation epic. On the other hand it probably saves him a bunch of foreboding and angst. Being the one-eyed man in the land of the blind ain't always a happy thing.

Unexpected upside of being a sprite? Think at computer speeds and nobody notices when you zone out for random digressions. Now what was the topic again...? Oh, right.

Davesprite shrugs his good wing. "Yeah, the whole thing. No big, just another awesome sprite advantage. All the code's still here, just gotta wait for it to write back into realspace."

"Weird," John says, still looking like he won't believe it until he sees orange feathery proof. (Or gets his glasses smacked off by said proof and can't see anything. Davesprite votes option two.)

"I think it's cool," Jade says. She sidles over and pokes gently at the remains of Davesprite's bad wing, fingers drifting over the skin, bone, and fluffy down just firm enough not to tickle. "Won't it itch, though? My scabs always do and this is like the biggest scab ever."

In a Purple Wood (250 words):

(Inspired by the 1/18/13 [livejournal.com profile] 15_minute_fic word #265: normal)

Terezi met Nepeta by accident.

This was a polite way of saying she'd gotten lost in the woods between the pink moon's set and the green moon's rise and was walking around with her eyes closed in a highly experimental attempt to reach out and grab the nebulous sense of her lusus's dreams and turn that into an actual physical direction. The only tangible result so far had been stubbed toes, tattered pant cuffs, and a growing sense of panic as the forest went silent around her. She'd been thrashing around like wounded prey and a predator had found her trail.

Well, she was a predator too! A very lost and rather small predator, but no troll worth her name and sign would go down without a fight!

Terezi opened her eyes and began to ease her way toward the nearest tree. High ground was always an advantage, and she was excellent at climbing if she did say so herself.

But before she reached the trunk, something compact and heavy crashed down from an overhanging branch, shoving Terezi flat to the ground. Her chin slammed into the ashes of dead leaves and her teeth dug viciously into her lips, shredding skin and flooding her mouth with the sour rush of blood.

"A purrfect strike!" the weight on her back proclaimed. "The mighty huntress purrvails once again in purrtecting her territory! Take that, intruder!"

Terezi mashed her face further into the forest floor and groaned. Vriska would never let her live this down.

---------------

I have no idea where I was going with the first fragment.

The second fragment was going to be another "Tales from the Yellow Yard" fic, but it never really clicked and I abandoned it unfinished.

"In a Purple Wood" is canon for my "Alternian Nights" sequence of fics. It's just disproportionately shorter than the other three stories and I couldn't figure out where to go after the initial meeting -- what happens is Nepeta takes Terezi back to her cave for the day and then Terezi cautiously allows Nepeta to visit her own hive in return, but I couldn't make that narratively interesting, alas. :-(

-----

And that's pretty much it for fic scraps, aside from some original fiction which is too short to contain any useful contextual information, and I don't feel like writing ten paragraphs of non-fiction to explain two paragraphs of actual fiction. Somehow that doesn't feel like a good use of my time. *wry*

In any case, I should get back to writing the epilogue of "Secrets," which has been giving me absolute fits of frothing frustration. I think I have been approaching it all wrong and should start over with a different scene at a different time and place (though the same three characters) which will hopefully be more conducive to making them have the conversation I want them to have. *resolve face*
