edenfalling

AKA, pictures I took while walking home from work today because I was bored. The first is a rhododendron. Who even knew they had blossoms? The second and third are various lilies; I think the orange ones are day lilies, but I have no clue about the red ones.

I have to say, when you said "in the rain" you were REALLY not kidding! AR AR AR! Both of those look like they're drowning. The orange ones are day lilies, the red ones (that grow in a single stalk) are probably Asian lilies of some kind. All prettyful, despite the sogginess!

Azaleas are definitely planted for their flowers! And they are in the same, um... *pause for quick google search* genus as rhododendrons proper, so it makes sense that most rhododendrons are more flowery than the ones I am familiar with. I gather that big American rhododendrons (the Appalachian kind, which is what I think this one is though the flower I photographed doesn't match the stock photo Wikipedia provides; it's around fifteen feet tall which seems pretty big to me) tend to be hillside or mountain plants; perhaps they don't do as well in flat lake valleys? Also, this particular rhododendron was planted by Ithaca's public tree service several years back to replace a tree/shrub/whatever that they'd removed from whatever that weird lawn strip between sidewalk and road is called, so I am inclined to think their motives were more "yay, species variety!" than "yay, pretty flowers!"

Ithaca got over 1.5 inches of rain on Monday, so yeah, not kidding about the water. Everything around here is thoroughly drenched.
