Dad drove up to Ithaca on Friday morning, and picked me up from work at noon. We then brought some stuff in to my apartment (rugs, mostly), took some stuff out (trash), and watered my plants. Then we hit the road, heading south on 13 for 17 (which is being turned into Interstate 86).

We took 86 west to I-90 and followed that all the way past Chicago, up to Tomah, WI, where I-94 peels off and heads for the Twin Cities. (We did not, of course, drive all that in one day. We stopped at Elkhart, IN, for Friday night, and reached St. Paul at around 6pm on Saturday.)

Ardis, my step-grandmother, has been very sick for several months with a fungal infection in her lungs. She's on medication and does have good days now, but so far she hasn't had two good days in a row. She was having a good day on Saturday, so we (and my Aunt Jan and Uncle Bob) went out for dinner. This was particularly nice since the power was out in her neighborhood and the air conditioner was therefore not working.

Sunday was a bad day, so we all hung around and did various things around the house, like laundry and putting in a new kitchen light fixture, until she was starting to feel better around 1pm. Then Dad and I headed up US-10, to MN-371, to Cass Lake.

Today was our first full day on the island, and mostly what it did was rain. The temperature hit about 68 around noon, and dropped steadily thereafter, so we never did get around to any of the outside chores, such as sawing the new fallen trees or splitting logs into usable firewood. We didn't check the state of the moss on the roof, nor did we spray for poison ivy. We didn't hike, we didn't swim, and we didn't take the boat out for a ride. *sigh*

Instead, I finished catching up on my friends-list, which I'd been skipping through to avoid HBP spoilers, and I edited the rough draft of "Secrets" chapter 9. That is now on its way through the electronic ether to my betas.

I remember being very nervous before the publication of OotP, because I was afraid JKR's characterization of Ginny would completely contradict mine. It didn't; in fact, I think I got Ginny rather well. I still think I have a good grasp of Ginny... perhaps better even than JKR. She often doesn't seem to understand her own characters that well. Ginny is not sweetness and light. She has a temper, an underhanded and vindictive streak, and a tendency to prefer a supporting role rather than to take charge and thus accept any negative consequences of her actions.

Because of this, I wasn't nervous about the publication of HBP, at least not in relation to my own writing. And so far as I can see, none of the new Tom backstory conflicts with "Secrets." In fact, some of it dovetails quite nicely into my own idle speculation.

So this first island day hasn't been very characteristic of the island, but it's been productive in its own way. :-)
