Moral Tales, Week #???

Sunday May 18th was the last day of RE for this year, and thus my last day teaching the Moral Tales curriculum -- probably ever! (We are switching to a workshop model next fall instead of the standard yearly/weekly model, you see.) Anyway, the conceit of this curriculum is to teach kids how to decide what the good and right thing to do is, in any given situation, and then how to actually do that thing even if it's difficult. So each lesson focuses around something like generosity, cooperation, respect, empathy, nonviolence, courage, perseverance, etcetera, all helpfully illustrated by the Moral Compass poster we kept up on the wall of the classroom.
So yesterday, we made small, portable versions of that compass for the kids to take home as a reminder. The compass needle does actually spin -- it's held on with a button and a bit of wire. I ended up with a slightly defective photocopy and had to write the label on the arrow myself, which is why that's in slightly different handwriting from the divisions of the compass.

Date: 2014-05-23 10:47 am (UTC)There are regime changes going down at our fellowship this summer, and I am probably going to be the new R E director. Never done this before, but it helps to have been a life long UU and a teacher.
There are several curriculums already available in the fellowship's library, but no one seems very interested n those. Do you have any suggestions?
I have about 4 tinies, and 4 nine to eleven year olds, and a few others around the same ages that show sometimes. I have been given a web address, but I don't have a clue what' s good.
I am sorry to read of your stress and depression. Trying to find a job and keep going is hard. Goods thoughts your way...

Date: 2014-06-01 05:48 am (UTC)Of the programs for kids found here, I have only personally taught Creating Home and Moral Tales, both of which are decent in my opinion. I mean, they need some tweaking for the situation on the ground, but that is true of any curriculum.
I'm feeling a little better this weekend -- questions from customers have tapered off a bit, and I've also created a sort of standardized sound bite that preemptively answers the most common followup questions, which shortens those conversations and also conveys, through tone and the obvious practice of my delivery, that I am sick and tired of talking about this and don't have any more information to provide. Also, I've mostly decided to go slow on the job search front until further into June, because it was stressing me out trying to do so many things at once. I can survive on unemployment for a while. I could even survive with NO income of any sort for about six months, though I really don't want to go that route. So I am trying to cut myself some slack in the name of mental health, at least for a little while. *wry*
