wherein Liz is accepted back into college!
Jun. 6th, 2014 07:43 pmVictory is mine!!! \o/
I got a response to my email today saying that the "we need your high school transcript" message had been sent in error, and in fact my application was complete and had been reviewed, and I had been accepted. Apparently I will be receiving a letter in the mail soon, and the local extension center in Ithaca has been notified and they should be contacting me as well.
I believe course registration opens in mid-June, and courses begin in September. So I have plenty of time to get ready and to make sure I have a stable and reliable internet connection.
(Notes on that front, FYI: Upstairs Neighbors R and A are moving out as of June 30th, since R has finished grad school and found a job in Boston. Diagonal Neighbor P, who has also been sharing R & A's internet connection, has offered to get her own connection and share it with me in return for the use of my driveway, but I'm a little leery of the stability of such a connection -- it's a pretty big house, and the wireless will have a lot further to go than simply down through the floor. Also P is kind of, um, well she's nice and all but I don't get a huge sense of reliability from her, and it's always been kind of a pain to rely on somebody else's router that I can't just go reset on my own when it throws a fit. So I may just call Verizon or Time Warner and set up my own independent connection. It will be more expensive, but probably less problematic in the long run.)
Anyway, this is a huge weight off my mind. It will also make my resume look better -- actively working toward a bachelor's degree is much more salable than "I did some college and dropped out but I'm thinking about going back, really I am."
So yes. Massive task #1 is defeated! :-D

Date: 2014-06-07 03:40 am (UTC)Amusingly enough, I too am going back to finish up my bachelor's degree in September. Long-distance fist bump of solidarity? ;o)

Date: 2014-06-07 05:12 am (UTC)It's a little vertiginous to be really and truly seriously committed to this endeavor, but not in a bad way. I'm looking forward both to learning new things and to proving to myself that I can so finish a degree.

Date: 2014-06-09 03:14 am (UTC)Empire State College doesn't do "majors" as such, more areas of study. So I'm going to do a degree in either cultural studies or historical studies. I like history, I like culture, I am good at analyzing texts and writing essays (even if I'm a bit out of practice on the later), so it seemed like the best fit.

Date: 2014-06-07 01:36 pm (UTC)re: neighbors, should probably test their wifi before getting your own? Or *you* get a connection and share it with her. if you're more responsible than she is then everyone should be happy about it... >_>

Date: 2014-06-09 03:18 am (UTC)The lack of interest in sharing is mostly because I want to be able to fix my own problems without having to trek upstairs and knock on a neighbor's door in the middle of the night... but that works in reverse, too. In theory, sharing is good. Yay maximizing use of resources! In practice, sometimes the inefficiency and the delicate dance of negotiation around other people's needs and schedules can be too annoying to be worth the savings. Particularly if you're fairly asocial to start with. :-/
