I'm heading off to a job fair. Oh god, they're all going to hate me and I'm going to die. It will be terrible and embarrassing and the worst moment of my entire life. I will literally evaporate in shame and/or run out of the building on fire from spontaneous human combustion.

*twitch, twitch, panic*

...

...

Okay, right. I can do this. The worst that will happen is I won't get a job, which is exactly where I am now, but I will be a person without a job who has talked to hiring people at several companies and gotten their contact info. Also there are some organizations looking to drum up volunteers, and that sort of thing looks good when people ask you what you've been doing while unemployed.

So yeah. I am heading off to a job fair.

Good luck! Job hunting definitely demands some form of anti-anxiety measures, do not feel bad about freaking out, you deserve to freak out in non-judgemental peace.

Thanks! I find that a compressed and artificially heightened freak-out generally gets rid of my jitters. The trick is to do it at home (or online, I suppose) instead of in the bathroom of the company where you're waiting for an interview. *wry*

Thank you! I find that if I compress my fears and exaggerate them to ridiculous heights -- that is, if allow myself a few minutes to run around shouting that the sky is falling and the apocalypse is nigh -- I can usually kill the majority of my nerves before a stressful event, rather than being moderately jittery all the way through. It looks a little silly, but it's surprisingly effective. :-)

I know these things are ghastly. It will be FINE. Really. You are awesome - a hard working, dedicated, responsible, reliable person. No one will hate on you, everyone tries to be nice and it's just a miserable experience for which you should reward yourself after with a glass of wine, a nice walk, or something.

It did go well, as I thought it would. :-) I just find it more effective to compress my nerves into five minutes of pure over-the-top panic than to be sort of low-grade anxious through several hours of trying to talk to people. It's not a method that would work for everyone, but I can usually short-circuit the worst of my fears by forcing my hindbrain to see them as ridiculous and illogical -- hence the whole "spontaneous human combustion" business. *wry*

But I did take a nice long walk as soon as I got home, and I am totally treating myself to a glass or two of wine tonight. Because eesh, that was exhausting.
