As of one hour ago, I am officially registered for the Fall 2 term at Empire State College's Center for Distance Learning! I am taking one class, on the economic history of the west. My course materials should arrive from the college bookstore next week and the class itself will begin on October 27th.

Vicky very kindly stayed on the phone with me while I negotiated the registration interface, reset my forgotten password, experienced literal cold feet, and wrote a check for the largest amount of money I have ever paid anyone all in one go. I am so glad I have a sister. We don't see each other in person very much these days, but there's a lot of comfort knowing she'll always have my back when I need her. (And I will have hers, too, of course! It goes both ways.)

This year has been wildly up and down for me -- more down than up, I think -- but this right here? This is a good thing. :-)

Great news! How long does the course run? I expect you'll enjoy it enormously. :) (What does "west" mean here?)

The semester runs through late February, and I believe that in this case, "the West" means Europe and the Americas, with the rest of the world considered only insofar as it was colonized, though the Middle East and northern Africa may get some independent mention. (I mean, it's hard to talk coherently about Europe without talking about the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, not to mention Rome held all of the Mediterranean coast, not just the northern half. But maybe that's just me and the course will take a more ethnocentric view. I guess I will find out in a couple weeks!)

One can never be completely sure about these things, of course, but it certainly sounds promising. I like history when it gets all multi-disciplinary. :-)

Thanks! I haven't talked that over with my mentor yet. I figured I'd take one class this semester just to get back into the rhythm of college, and wait until next semester to get serious about planning a course of study and seeing what, if anything, I can apply RL experiences to.

It's definitely worth checking out. Empire State is pretty well known for that. :) I think you'd be surprised at how much you have.
