[redacted]:You're story WAS brilliant, until the last chapter. I loved the 2nd chapter the most. It really brought out team 7's personalities nicely. I loved the chapter with Hinata too! I'm a big Hina fan and I liked how at the end you gave her a voice. She's so timid and shy and I like how you finally made her speak for herself. I just hate the last chapter! *marvels at the utterly non-referential navel-gazing-ness of it* I mean, that's kind of impressive in a totally "just because the Author Is Dead doesn't mean you get to be God, now" kind of way.

The many and various ways people fail to understand that texts don't have a One True Interpretation (regardless of who is trying to impose the reading in question) can get pretty ridiculous. *wry*

Yes, I was recently told in no uncertain terms that a character who is always called by a nickname is "really" named Letitia. After I explained why I called her something else in my fic, the response was that we should keep calling her by her nickname in the series (because we don't know what her "real" name is?), despite the fact that for many reasons it's an inappropriate nickname for an adult. Sigh.

On the other hand, sometimes I do think that a writer really has a character WRONG. In which case I don't say anything about it, because why?

I can see some use in correcting blatant errors of fact, though even that can be a highly fraught area. Once you hit the realm of character interpretation, it's generally better to just back-button away.

And given how idiosyncratic nicknames can be, I see no reason for anyone to be sure what a character's full name is if we're only canonically given a nickname. I mean, my great-aunt was known as "Duke" to almost everyone except her husband. Her given name? Lolita. Good luck finding a connection there...
