Random fact about my dad: he is a professional historian. He is also the kind of person who annotates his books, extensively. Which means that as I'm reading his well-worn paperback copy of Eric Hobsbawm's The Age of Revolution, I also get to read him augmenting or contesting Hobsbawm's evidence and analysis. It's a bit like eavesdropping on a lively seminar discussion. :-)

That's really cool! What's his field? My mom is a theater historian, but she has done most of her work outside of academia.

He's primarily a historian of science and technology. For the majority of my childhood, he worked on the Edison Papers Project, until they had some funding woes in the late 90s; since then he's been erratically employed and is currently editing an encyclopedia volume about the history of mass spectrometry. Before I was born, he also spent some years teaching British history at Drew University.

That background means he has strong opinions on anything to do with the Industrial Revolution, so I've been watching him go "Argh, no, you are missing/misinterpreting the point!!!" at least once every other page. *grin*

*grin* indeed. Of course, generalists always get things wrong, but some get them wrong-er than others.

This reminds me of how Lewis wrote somewhere that he had a book that used to belong to some big name in literary criticism, and hoped he could learn from their notes, but found out they were always only at the beginning of a poem and stopped after a while. You're luckier than that!

I love history so much. All periods are interesting! But yeah, the Industrial Revolution (and the French Revolution, which is the other half of Hobsbawm's book) is particularly fascinating and turbulent.

Its the wonderful upsurge in civic sense which grabs me - public water supply, education, hospitals - and the way that suddenly people seemed to see that we are all part of one another, but not bound by the Great Chain of Being. Ummmm.. socialism!
