I've been watching Marvel's Daredevil on Netflix this week -- one or two episodes per day; I'm on episode 7 next -- and I have to say, if they were going for a sort of fusion of classic noir, seventies conspiracy/mafia dramas, and kung-fu comic book action, they hit the mark pretty damn well. The overpowering effect is of creeping existential dread plus a LOT of violence.
I mean, I like it! The characters are engaging, the plot is tense and gripping in all the right ways, and the performances are really solid. There's also a surprising amount of humor and people being supportive of each other. But it's not exactly easy watching.

I think I will leave episode seven for tomorrow. Even aside from my general audiovisual media difficulties, there is only so much adrenaline I can take in one day.

The fight scenes are meaty and ugly -- there are balletic moves, but unlike a lot of stylized action movie/tv violence, you can never forget how much it all hurts. Fisk is a very interesting villain (you will see more of his backstory in an episode or two). I like the way that Matt's secret identity intersects with his "real life" identity. And I like most of the supporting characters. I'm looking forward to the other Netflix Marvel series -- which is funny, because I don't know the comics at all.
And I love the opening credits.

I especially love that Karen seems to be getting her own narrative arc that intersects what Matt and Fisk are doing but is not dependent on them. Heck, I think she has a more proactive narrative role than Foggy so far, which is really neat.
The opening credits are definitely cool. :-)
