"Guardian" progress report

Gnrgh, fight scenes. I revised a thing because the initial setup had unfortunate implications, but I still need to do some heavy choreography to make things seem plausible from the opponents' side. And while I have successfully managed to ignore one third of the fight, I do need to keep another third in my peripheral attention, as it were, because it may crash into the third I'm actually writing in full and should certainly be providing background noises and stuff. This is important in my quest to not have my scenes feel like they occur in a vast sea of formless blank space!

Chapter 16 currently = 1,175 words, so I'm about a quarter of the way through according to past averages. I guess the question is how long this scene will run, and if it winds up eating half the chapter, whether I should move scene three or scene four to chapter 17. (Probably scene three. Otherwise chapter 17 will get structurally weird since it would have two Eiji-POV scenes in a row unless I made up something for Naga-tachi out of whole cloth... which I might have to do anyway for continuity purposes, come to think of it. *sigh* Stupid timelines. It's really annoying keeping everything in order!)

Anyway, I think I'll go post chapter 2 to AO3 now. :-)

*shakes pompoms encouragingly at Chapter 16* Hopefully the Naga storyline will gather the momentum of moving toward where it crosses the main storyline, and be cooperative.

Oh, Naga's storyline has stuff happening... just not on day 14. (Day 0 is the Uchiha massacre, for reference.) They do a bunch of plot-relevant stuff on day 15 and onward, but on day 14, all they're currently scheduled to do is travel east. I mean, I could probably work up something character-based, once I have the results of this fight and the next Naga-tachi scene pinned solidly into words, but at the moment? Their part of day 14 is vague like a vague thing of vagueness.

Honestly, I hope it will remain vague and irrelevant because that will mean the story as a whole is moving at a reasonable clip instead of slowing down to show Every Single Thing. :-)

You're doing way better than I would with fight scenes. Mine would probably be something like "X and Y fight, and X did an awesome finishing move that caused Y to be defeated".

They're annoyingly complicated once you have more than two people involved, particularly when you don't want them to seem ridiculously lopsided. In this case, I need the Volcano-nin to do well enough that their choice to attack doesn't come off as suicidal idiocy, but not too well because Naga and company have to keep traveling soon and therefore can't get injured past a certain degree of seriousness.

Also I just want everyone to look cool, because otherwise what is the POINT of awesome ninja powers? *grin*
