wherein Liz defeats NFE

I gave up on my NFE fic this afternoon and wrote a completely different story instead. In retrospect, I am not surprised at my complete and utter failure to make my first idea (or my second idea, or the blending of the two) work in any way, shape, or form. I will explain why in two weeks, after authors are revealed, but for now I'll just say there are reasons I treat a certain area of human life the way I do in fiction, and I should have known that attempting to approach that area from certain other perspectives would end in tears.

But hey, I did finish and post a fic! It's horribly rough, but the bones of the thing are sound and I have a week to bash it into better shape. I will count that as a victory.

(And I think I managed to be anonymous! I mean, I always think my writing is pretty obviously me -- I can spot my own vocal tics at a thousand paces -- but I was able to keep the obviously identifying details of my world-building out of the story, which is something I was very worried about for a long time.)

It may become more obvious after an initial round of edits -- I may or may not end up inserting some of my more recognizable headcanon stuff to play up one of the themes. :-)

Thanks! I actually could have had a very easy time if I hadn't been striving for anonymity, but I felt that was somewhat against the spirit of the exchange, so I rashly attempted a story type that runs incredibly counter to my... hmm... to my fundamental understanding of and approach to the world? I mean, I knew it was a kind of thing I had always shied away from writing, but I didn't realize quite how strong that disinclination was until I tried to work past it. (This will make a lot more sense in two weeks when I can be specific about the problem element and the reasons why it's a problem for me.)

I didn't plan it this way, but my offers were for characters/time periods I haven't written about before. That makes it easier to succeed at anonymity.
