Yuletide nominations

Yay, my Yuletide noms got approved! I suspect some of them might be duplicates, but they weren't listed on the nomination-coordinating spreadsheet and I have had years where I skipped nominations on the theory that "Fandom X always gets nominated anyway" and then had Fandom X not actually be nominated, so. There's also the issue of making sure the characters you want are available to request, which is sometimes irrelevant but other times matters a great deal; this year falls into the latter case for me.

Basically I made sure I could make my perennial The Lions of Al-Rassan prompt (will this be the year it finally gets filled???), my Karla-gets-a-happy-sex-life prompt, and a new idea for Darkangel fic that occurred to me recently and which I would love to read: namely, something about Syllva and Eryka and their relationship as sisters, travelers, and sometime-rulers of Isternes and various points west, because sisters are awesome and I want to know more about them as the heroes of their own stories rather than background figures in their children's stories. (That nomination took longest to approve, probably because Syllva and Eryka did not previously exist in AO3's tagging system.) I will doubtless make one or two other requests as well -- I am always up for fic about The Dispossessed, for example, or maybe Daredevil (616 version) if that makes it through, because I want someone to properly develop Milla Donovan beyond her love for Matt, dammit! -- but other people were already taking care of those fandoms so I didn't need to bother. :D

"Karla gets a happy sex life" from the Anne Bishop series, right? None of my noms has been approved yet, and I am nailbiting.

Yes, Karla from the Black Jewels series. Who is a canonical lesbian, but who never gets to act on that, and in fact ends up forming a weird (presumably non-sexual) echo of a typical heterosexual nuclear family with one of her male guards and an adopted orphan. I am not opposed to the found family thing; I just want her to have sex too.

Two of my noms and the characters for them have been approved! Not surprised, as they were both pretty unambiguously eligible: one is a teeny tiny fandom, the other a big little fandom that I probably didn't have to nominate because it's a perennial on Yuletide. In fact, I should have nominated some more minor characters, but didn't think of it in time, dammit!

The nom that hasn't been approved is Green Sky, which as far as I can tell has no stories on fanfic.net and only a handful on AO3, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't be eligible. Presumably they just haven't gotten to it yet.

I think one of the mods said they were dealing with nominations in rough order of increasing difficulty. Perhaps Green Sky is simply small enough that none of them know it personally and they therefore decided to check it after they dealt with stuff they recognize more readily.

Yup! I just went and checked again, and the fandom and characters are approved. The interesting thing is that I didn't include the surnames of the characters I nominated and they added them in. So either one of the mods knows the books or they went and checked them, because the surnames are not anywhere on AO3 or (I am reasonably certain) fanfic.net. Very thorough!

Only one of my nominations has been approved so far, but I'm not too worried about the other two. They both easily meet eligibility criteria, and one already has canonical tags.

I was idly thinking about things I've either requested or written in past Yuletides, and I remembered one year I wanted minor-character fic for the Darkangel trilogy but only Aeriel, Irrylath, Erin, and I think maybe Ravenna had been nominated, so I had to select 'any' and then write a 'so I said any, and I accept that you may only want to write about the nominated characters, BUT...' prompt and letter. Then I started thinking about other minor characters who might have interesting stories, which ran into the way I am currently attempting to write a second chapter of a Susan-and-Lucy-have-an-adventure fic and I thought, "Oh hey, SISTERS." :D

I am not surprised it's taking the mods a while to go through the nominations list. There are SO MANY fandoms to check! *boggles slightly at the amount of work that must take*

:D Maybe this year you'll get the minor character Darkangel fic of your dreams?

I was really impressed that they'd managed to get through half already. I was expecting it to take at least a week. And yeah, it's terrifying thinking of all the fact-checking they'd have to do for the more obscure fandoms!

Oh, I did get an awesome minor character fic that year! It's the one about all the other icari, and who they were before Oriencor took and changed them. Uh, hang on a sec, let me find the link...

But that was sheer chance, and a Treat to boot rather than an assigned gift, so this year I decided to make sure I could put the characters I want in the actual 'you are required to write this' part of the deal rather than relying solely on optional details which are, of course, optional.

(I am so very glad I am not responsible for sorting through the Yuletide tagset.)
