Aha! I have resolved my Hilarion-Lamion-Ion confusion!

Near the end of KoA, in the scene where Attolis ruins his bedroom after receiving news about Nahuseresh, he explicitly orders Cleon and Ion to come help him change while the other attendants clean up the mess. Both Lamion and Hilarion participate in the conversation after the king leaves, which means Ion must be a separate person rather than a nickname for either of them.

(That remains, of course, an incredibly trivial issue, but I like to have things clear. Next I want to see if I can turn the described geography of our three focus countries into any kind of coherent map...)

Map, please! I am not good at visualizing this sort of thing; while reading, I tend to just assume that the author knows where everything is and trust that it all makes sense somewhere, if not in my head.

Speculative map-making will require a couple evenings spent combing the books for every mention of geography and then a bunch of hair-pulling, I suspect. But hopefully it can be done!

The Queen's Thief series is currently four YA-ish books by Megan Whalen Turner (there will eventually be six, total; book five might be published next year and book six... who knows! book one was published back in the mid-90s) that deal with politics and war and occasional intrusions from the gods in three countries that form the secondary-world equivalent of Byzantine-era Greece. It is basically impossible to talk in detail about the later books without spoiling all hell out of book one (The Thief), or to talk about books three and four without spoiling all hell out of book two (The Queen of Attolia), but I can attest that even if you do know the major spoilers, there are still a bunch of smaller surprises and the writing and characters hold up excellently even if you already know some of the secrets.

I'd been hearing people talk positively about the books for many years (the series is a perennial Yuletide favorite) and am glad I finally did get around to reading them. :)
