My air conditioner appears to have developed an internal mildew infestation. Eurgh.

I am not entirely sure how to get rid of the mildew. I mean, clean all contaminated surfaces with bleach, obviously, but I don't know if the sections I need to reach even come apart and I'm a little afraid to break the AC while attempting to fix it. The manual is not much help on that front, since it only details how to get at the filter (which is not currently the problem, though it couldn't hurt to dust the thing while I'm at it). I suppose I could try a toothbrush...?

Anyway, Tuesday is not supposed to get very hot and Tuesday night may dip into the 50s, so whatever happens, I can at least give the machinery a good long while to dry out after I get done with whatever the cleaning process ends up being.

kk-maker suggested using a spray bottle to get bleach to the spots I can't manually reach. This sounds reasonable to me. :)

Meanwhile in South Moravia, air conditioning is done by leaving the windows open at night.
It's the one single area of the country where I think actual AC would be welcome in summer. Meaning, of course, I have zero suggestions for you! Just wishing you good luck. :P

Shutting the house up during the day and opening everything at night (plus electric fans to move the air) works up until about... let's say 85F at midafternoon and 65F at night. (30C and 18-19C, respectively) Any hotter than that, and the days become intolerable while nights don't bring any appreciable cooling effect. :(

Anyway, I turned the AC back on on Thursday and the bleach smell had mostly dissipated by Friday afternoon.

Soak the filter in white vinegar & scrub with baking soda and vinegar. Bleach isn't the best thing since it's toxic to breathe.

Oh, the filter was fine! A little dusty, but fine. (And now not even dusty, because I rinsed it in my kitchen sink.) The mildew was in the outflow section, not the intake, and unfortunately the louvers and such are not removable: hence, spray-bottle.

I sprayed bleach-and-water Monday night and again Tuesday morning, which has provided plenty of time for evaporation, and I plan to be out of my apartment for all of Wednesday afternoon and evening (after I turn the AC back on), which should allow the majority of the fumes to dissipate while I'm not around to breathe them.
