pepper update, Monday 10/10/16
Oct. 10th, 2016 10:23 pmFYI, I put up a backdated pepper post for 9/19, 9/26, and 10/3, since I didn't get around to crossposting those pictures here last Monday even though I did get them all onto Tumblr. (I write my posts in the hmtl editor rather than the rich text editor, which means I have to do a bunch of tedious hand-coding on image posts.)
---------------
There was a frost advisory for Ithaca last night, so I brought all my peppers into the kitchen. I took them out today once it hit 50F... and then back in again at sunset since tonight there is a freeze warning, which is apparently slightly more serious than a frost advisory. I mean, in either case the lake valley is less affected than the surrounding hills, but a couple of my peppers are flowering (yes, in freaking October) and that's a delicate stage so I figure better safe than sorry.

.
and here they are outside again for the afternoon
Now on to some buds and flowers! Photos 1 and 2 are the Lazarus pepper, photo 3 is the decapitated pepper, and photo 4 is the pepper that kept getting nibbled by squirrels until it had only its backup-of-a-backup buds left, which (thanks to some additional issues with the animal repellent spray) took a long time to develop enough to bloom.
.
my Lazarus pepper, tentatively preparing to bloom
.
the decapitated pepper and the nibbled pepper, in varying stages of bloom
And here is the part where I basically spam you with peppers, because I can. :DDD
Of possible minor interest: note the dog in the background of photo #4! Dottie wandered onto the porch to see what I was doing partway through my photoshoot. The purple stripes in photo #3 are from my shirt, which is the only shirt I have ever owned that has gotten longer over the years -- when I bought it from Target fifteen years ago, it was a normal length and the sleeves came just to the heels of my palms. Now it comes down over my butt and the sleeves extend nearly three inches past the tips of my fingers. O_o

.
.
1) this is the pepper that was getting overwatered by gutter runoff. 2) this is the lone survivor of a squirrel attack; I don't expect it to get very big. 3) this is on the plant that got a whole branch ripped off by squirrels. 4) this plant has had nothing bad happen to it ALL SUMMER; what is its secret?!
.
.
.
5) this pepper is on a damaged branch, which is why it's hanging sideways. 6) these are on the same plant as the previous picture. 7) I may pick and process this pepper tomorrow; the hole just visible in the back turns it into a rain collector. 8) the pepper on the beleaguered plant in the green plastic pot, survivor of many a squirrel.
