Narnian Timelines

edenfallingI said a while ago that I ought to start working on a unified Narnian timeline and then mentioned some problems that effort had created -- I have fixed both of those, by the way -- and now I am pleased to announce that I have finished the project... or at least gotten it into compliance with my extant writing in this fandom. So I'm posting the whole thing, because A) I think it's kind of cool, and B) it may be of some use if anyone wants a better idea of how my Narnia fanfic fits together.
A lot of this is borrowed from Lewis's own Narnian timeline, but I threw some of the extra-canonical stuff out because it made no sense (or is just depressing, like Cor's death date) and it's not in the books, so I can and will gleefully ignore it when I see fit. There are three timelines because my fanfiction covers three separate worlds: the world of Narnia, the world of Charn, and the world of England, which one may presumably call Earth.
Not all of my Narnian fanfiction fits into this timeline. I have deliberately left out my Problem of Susan fics, since several of them contradict each other and I'm constructing a this DID happen sort of timeline rather than an IF this happened, it MIGHT have happened roughly here-ish sort of timeline. I have also left out AUs, for obvious reasons. But everything that could plausibly fit has been included, plus all the history from my Thoughts on Calormen meta posts and a bunch of background world-building for "The Courting Dance."

Date: 2014-01-23 04:08 am (UTC)Also, laying out my fic against a concrete timeline makes my lack of interest in Telmarine Narnia (at least for writing purposes) even more blatant than before. Possibly I should try to fill in some stuff down at that end of the timeline. The trouble is that what most intrigues me is what the hell has been going on in Calormen that A) they seem to have adopted human sacrifice (if that isn't just Narnian xenophobic propaganda) and B) despite that (or perhaps because of that?), atheism has become so widespread in their army that Emeth is the only person who seems to object at all to the Tashlan gimmick in TLB. And I loathe TLB and don't want to reread it, even for world-building purposes. :-/
(Also I have a feeling it would turn into a TLB-denial fic, and run to novel-length, and I cannot afford that. I have too many other things to work on already!)

Date: 2014-01-26 06:35 am (UTC)It is, of course, possible that Cor abdicated, but that is not my first interpretation of the phrase "Ram the Great succeeds Cor as King of Archenland." 50 is a perfectly reasonable age at death for someone living in medieval times, but I choose to think Narnia and Archenland have better ideas about sanitation and medicine and so the average person lives at least to 60-ish.
Not all my stories fit onto this timeline! I like to have the option of going off on random tangents. But the vast majority do interrelate-- which is a tendency that has cropped up in several of my other fandoms as well. I get tired of reinventing the wheel, and a body of shared-continuity fanfiction can play off itself the same way any individual fic can play off canon.
