travels, writing, and bizarre gifts
Dec. 30th, 2004 03:47 pmSurprise! I'm back in New Jersey again!
My mom called last night saying that the family was invited to Susan's house for New Year's Eve (the Gepfords usually throw a party), and she thought I might be a bit lonely and at loose ends in Ithaca -- which I was.
So I caught a bus this morning and am now in Madison for the weekend. Life is weird like that.
-----------------------------
"Apartment Manager" is progressing, but more slowly. However, I finished chapter 4 of "More or Less the Same" last night. It needs revision -- it's way heavy on the introspection and I kind of lost the specifics of Anna's 'voice' partway through -- but it should be up soon. Then I can get back to Yukiko and company.
-----------------------------
My German... penpals isn't the right word. Former hosts, perhaps. Distant friends? Whatever. Anyway, we exchange letters and postcards at random times, and also Christmas presents. This year we sent some local wine, scented soaps, a few typically American snacks (such as saltwater taffy... mmmm, saltwater taffy...), and a tourist book about the Blue Ridge Mountain highway.
They sent us a book, a candle, some wine, Lebkuchen (I have yet to find a way to tactfully tell them that my dad and I don't eat it because it has nuts, and my mom and sister don't like it), and some Lebkuchen liquor.
How, exactly, you get an alcoholic beverage out of something that's like gingerbread made using hazelnuts for flour is beyond me.
I wonder what on earth it tastes like?
